Amidst the ongoing energy crisis and inflation across the world, an appeal made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has seen a completely opposite effect in Jammu. PM Narendra Modi had urged the countrymen to use less edible oil. But after this appeal in Jammu, there is panic in the market. Instead of using less, people have started buying more and more oil due to fear of shortage and inflation.

In view of the global crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently requested the countrymen to minimize the use of edible oil in their kitchen. The Prime Minister had said that if people do this, it will be a big step taken in the direction of national interest and patriotism.

When Rahul Gandhi called PM Modi a ‘traitor’, Mehbooba Mufti said, ‘So much…’

Fear started troubling the oil trader

Initially, the oil traders of Jammu were quite nervous after hearing this appeal. They started fearing that the Prime Minister’s call would have a direct impact on their business and there would be a huge decline in oil sales. But, the ground reality proved to be exactly the opposite.

Traders’ worries gone, competition to order stock

Jammu’s big oil trader Suraj Singh says that after the Prime Minister’s appeal, the market environment has completely changed. There is a fear among the people that there may be a huge shortage of edible oil in the coming days and they may have to face huge inflation. Due to this fear (Panic Buying), people have started buying more oil than their requirement and stocking it in their homes.

Suraj Singh said that due to this sudden increase in demand, the prices of mustard oil in Jammu have increased by about ₹ 30 per liter. Despite the increasing prices, people are continuously purchasing. In view of this unexpected demand for oil in the market, traders are now having to order additional stock from outside, so that the needs of the customers can be met.

Gold Import Duty: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently appealed to the citizens of the country not to buy gold for a year. A few days later, the Government of India increased the effective import duty on gold and silver from 6 percent to 15 percent, which has come into effect from midnight of May 13, 2026.

The government has increased the Basic Customs Duty (BCD) to 10 percent, on which 5 percent Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC) is applicable. Due to this the total tax increased to 15 percent. Similarly, a new duty of 10 percent will also be applicable on platinum and jewelery findings (pins, hooks).

Import duty on gold and other precious metals has been increased, and the revised rates will come into effect from midnight tonight. pic.twitter.com/7iWfOFp6j6

 — IANS (@ians_india) May 12, 2026

Why was the import duty increased?

The purpose of increasing the import duty on gold and other expensive metals is to control their import, reduce the trade deficit and strengthen the Indian rupee by reducing the pressure on foreign exchange reserves.

Gold import reached a record $72 billion in the financial year 2026, which has affected the country’s current account deficit (CAD). This strict step was taken to maintain economic stability amid the Iran-American war.

Impact on markets and investors

Due to increase in import duty, an immediate jump of up to Rs 2000 per 10 grams can be seen in the prices of gold and silver. After PM Modi’s appeal and now this news, there can be a big impact on the shares of companies like Titan, Kalyan Jewelers and Senco Gold.

Danger of smuggling may increase

Increasing the import duty from 6% to 15% can become a big incentive for smugglers because when the duty was low, the margin was low. Now including 15% duty and 3% GST, the total difference in tax is 18%. Experts say that now there can be a difference of more than Rs 11 lakh per kg of gold between international markets like Dubai and Indian markets, which is enough to activate illegal networks.

Petrol-Diesel Price Today on May 13: People are worried about the energy security of the country due to PM Modi’s appeal during a program in Hyderabad on Sunday. During this, PM Modi had appealed to the countrymen to use fuel and edible oil wisely and avoid buying gold for the next one year.

Any change seen in prices today?

The ongoing war between America and Iran is affecting many countries as many major sea routes including the strategically important ‘Strait of Hormuz’ have been disrupted. This has affected the supply of crude oil and LPG. After PM Modi said this, now it is also being speculated that the Central Government is going to increase the prices of petrol and diesel. However, even today on May 13, there is no change in fuel prices in the country.

There was no change in the prices of petrol and diesel on Wednesday also, while due to geopolitical tension in West Asia, huge fluctuations are being seen in the global oil markets. It is noteworthy that Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) revise the prices of petrol and diesel every day at around 6 am and set them in line with the current global crude oil prices and currency exchange rates.

loss to oil companies

Indian government oil companies are currently facing huge financial pressure. Indian Oil (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) are collectively incurring a loss of Rs 1000-1700 crore every day on the sale of petrol-diesel and domestic LPG. It is estimated that at present oil companies are incurring a loss of Rs 14 per liter on petrol, Rs 42 per liter on diesel and Rs 674 per cylinder on domestic cooking gas (LPG).

Work From Home: In his recent Hyderabad address, PM Modi has asked to give preference to work from home. After which there is an atmosphere of happiness among all the employees. Although the PM has only appealed to the companies, it has not been implemented. But still now the employees of the I sector are demanding re-implementation of work from home.

Demand for work from home
In fact, according to the Economic Times, India’s IT employees’ organization, Nascent Information Technology Employee Senate (NITES), has written a letter to Union Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya demanding that wherever possible, Work from Home (WFH) should be implemented in the IT and ITES sector.

Also read: Gold Prices: Same gold, then why different prices in every country, these are the reasons for low gold rates in foreign countries.

It is written in the letter…
NITES has written this letter on 11 May 2026 in which it has made this demand from the Union Ministry of Labor and Employment in the interest of the country. He has written in it that wherever possible, work from home (WFH) should be implemented for some time in the sectors related to IT and digital services. It has also been written in this letter that during the Covid-19 pandemic, India’s IT and ITES sector had proved that working from home on a large scale is possible and it does not have any major impact on work or productivity.

Not only this, according to the organization, during the pandemic, most of the IT companies had successfully given the facility to the employees to work from home. With the help of cloud systems, cyber security tools, digital platforms and virtual management systems, the work of companies continued normally. This proves that work from home is a completely practical, technically possible and long-term option for many technology related positions.

The organization explained the problems of the employees
In this letter, while explaining its problems, the organization has also written that the daily commuting of employees to office is also a matter of concern. Millions of employees spend several hours every day traveling, even though their work can be done from home. Non-essential office travel increases fuel consumption, increases traffic jams, puts pressure on public transport and also harms the environment. Besides, it also affects the physical and mental health of the employees. The organization said that wherever possible, adopting remote work can help in fuel saving efforts in the country and work will also not be affected.
