Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has registered a big victory in the 13th parliamentary elections of the country. According to local media reports, BNP and its allies have won about 210 seats in the voting for 299 seats out of the 300-member Parliament. Voting on one seat was postponed due to the death of a candidate. This victory is being considered as a big change in the politics of the country. This election took place after the July 2024 movement, which ended the long rule of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Main opposition and other parties
This time, the Islamic alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has won about 70 seats and will play the role of the main opposition in the new parliament. Other small parties and independent candidates have won about 17 seats. The Election Commission has currently withheld the results of three seats because cases are pending in the court against the winning candidates.

Current BNP President Tariq Rahman returned to Bangladesh from London after 17 years of voluntary exile on 25 December 2025. He has won the elections from more than one seat and now there is every possibility of him becoming the Prime Minister.

This election was conducted under the supervision of the interim government, which was led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. This election was held after a long political crisis and is being considered the first real competitive election in many years. The voting percentage was around 59 percent, in which voters from both city and village areas participated.

Along with the parliamentary elections, a national referendum named ‘July National Charter’ was also conducted. Initial indications show that about 65 percent of voters have supported it, although final results are yet to come. There was tight security throughout the country during voting.
