Imagine, the real picture of the country is about to be revealed – the data of every house, every person and every village will be recorded digitally for the first time. This census, starting from April 1, 2026, will not only provide accurate data of our population, but will also tell which states, which districts and which areas are the most populous. The backbone of government schemes, parliamentary seats and representation will depend on this data. Will it change the map of India’s future politics and development?

Importance of Census 2027

The Government of India has announced that the country’s largest census will start from 1 April 2026. This will be the 16th census, which has been conducted since 1872. This time it will be completely digital, in which about 3 million enumerators will collect data through mobile app. Data collection will be done through apps available on both Android and iOS platforms. A 15-day self-enrollment option has also been kept, through which people can enter the information themselves.

Linkage of economics and census

The National Statistical Office (NSO) published the first estimates of GDP for 2025-26. This coincidence with this census is necessary, because the real objective of the growth of the economy is to ensure the well-being of the people. Census data will give an accurate indication of the extent to which government schemes and policies have been effective and where they need improvement.

political importance

Census is not just a task of counting population. It will also be used in redistricting of the premises of Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Southern and western states have succeeded in controlling birth rates, while northern, central and eastern states are growing rapidly in population. Based on this new data, the distribution of parliamentary seats may change, which may affect the balance of political power.

What things will be more focused on in Census 2027?

Census 2027 will provide information like household, language, religion, education, business activities, migration and birth rate. This data will be available up to village, city and ward level. With this, not only will the beneficiaries of the schemes be determined correctly, but policy making and administrative decisions will also be more effective.

Hopes and Challenges

This census will provide accurate information about the citizens of India and the effectiveness of policies will increase. However, the challenge at the political and administrative level will be to ensure that the data is used properly and the schemes reach all sections.

The growing population remains a problem for India at this time. Today, India is the most populous country in the world. It is also being said that due to so much population in India, poverty and unemployment are increasing here. China may have controlled its growing population, but at one time there was a similar situation. However, even today, China is the second most populous country in the world. The world’s population is said to be around 8 billion, but more than 40% of the population lives only in India and China. Let’s know why this is so.

Earth’s population is doubled

In today’s time, more developed countries are present in the world than India and China, so the thinking thing is that only these two countries have so much population, so what is special here. Why did the population of European and American countries not increase as much as it is in these two countries. Although this earth is perfect for up to 4 billion people to live, but in today’s date there is a double number of population. 60% of the world’s population lives only in Asia.

Cultivable land

Experts believe that India’s soil is very fertile and can be cultivated in a very good way. This can also be one of the reasons for increasing population. However, this is not from now on, but thousands of years ago, even during civilizations, India and China have been the center of large population. But there are many reasons for increasing population of these two countries, some of which are prominent.

Geographical cause

Both these countries are considered perfect to live geographically. India has the Himalayan range and China has a Changbai Mountain range in the range of China. Due to these two reasons, the icy winds of Siberia do not come here. Apart from this, these mountain range prevents the southern winds from going out, so the rain is good here.

Bread cloth and house easily get

There is no shortage of water in India and China. While about 400 rivers flow in India, this figure is more than 1500 in China. Because of this, a good living environment is formed in the mountains. Three things are usually important to stay alive. These three things are easily available in both countries. Due to good agricultural land in both countries, people started building houses to live here. Apart from this, there are high amounts of minerals and forests in both countries, which attract the population. Overall, due to such population in India and China, arable land, cultural reasons, economic development, natural resources and population growth are included.

India Religious Population Growth: Many religions live in India. The population here is also crossing 100 crores. By the year 2020, India’s total population was about 1.4 billion and its religious structure has been gradually changing. By this time, approximately 79 per cent of Indians are Hindus, while 15 per cent are Muslims and 2 per cent Christians. If these figures are compared with the 2011 census, the percentage of Hindus decreased and the Muslims have increased slightly.

According to the report of Pew Research, by 2050 the Hindu population will be 77 percent, while the Muslim population will reach 18 percent. There will be not much change in Christian population and it will remain at 2 percent. Other religious groups, such as Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains, may decrease due to their fertility rate being lower than the national average.

Population increase since partition
At the time of the 1951 census, India’s population was about 361 million. It exceeded 1.2 billion by 2011. This growth rate is more than three times since division. However, today India has become the most populous country in the world after 78 years of independence, which has left China behind.

Counting of Christian population
The counting of Christian population in India is not considered correct because some people of Scheduled Castes (Dalits), who consider themselves to be Christians, are recognized as Hindus for government benefits. In the 2015 National Family Health Survey, 21 per cent of Christians said that they belong to the Scheduled Castes, who refrain from calling themselves Christians in the census.

Decline in the growth rate of religious minorities
Between 1951 and 1961, the Muslim population increased by 32.7 per cent, while India’s total growth rate was 21.6 per cent. However, from 2001 to 2011, this difference decreased by 7 percent points. During this period, the population of Muslims increased by 24.7 percent, while the total Indian population was 17.7 percent. Similarly, the population of Christians increased by 15.7 per cent, which is much slower than the previous decades.

Full statistics of religious population
Although the rise rate of religious groups is decreasing, still all groups are showing millions in full numbers. For example, from 2001 to 2011, the number of Hindus increased by 138 million, while the number of Muslims increased by 34 million. Meanwhile, India’s total population increased by about 200 million people.

2021 census and pew research estimate
The 2021 census was postponed due to the Kornavirus epidemic, and its results may take some time to become public. However, the 2015 Pu Research Center had estimated the population of religious groups by 2050. According to him, there were about 1.4 billion people in India in 2020 and this number is continuously increasing.
