Especially many questions arise regarding big posts like DM (District Magistrate) and Police Commissioner. People want to know who among these two is more powerful, whose responsibilities are what and what are their salaries and facilities. Let us understand in simple language the functions, rights and salary of both the posts.</p>
<p><strong>DM</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">DM i.e. District Magistrate is an IAS officer and is the head of a district. It can be called the supervisor chair of the district. DM handles responsibilities like law and order, revenue administration, implementation of government schemes, monitoring of development works and disaster management in the district.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To become a DM, generally 5-6 years of experience as an IAS officer is required. DM has the authority to take final decisions in the district. In any district, it is the responsibility of the DM to implement Section 144, implement government policies on the ground and oversee development works. DM is considered very powerful because of his administrative power in the district. They also work as representatives of the state government.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">The post of Police Commissioner is applicable in metropolitan cities, where population and crime are high. Like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata. In the Commissionerate system, the Police Commissioner is considered the highest officer.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Police Commissioners are IPS officers. He has the authority of Executive Magistrate. They can take direct decisions to maintain law and order. In cities with a commissioner system, SPs and other police officers report to the commissioner. The rank of commissioner depends on the rules of the states. For example, in Delhi, commissioners are DGP rank officers, whereas in other cities, IGP rank officers can also become commissioners.</p>
<p><strong>How to become DM and Police Commissioner</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">To become DM one has to clear UPSC Civil Services Examination. After becoming an IAS officer and gaining many years of experience, he is appointed DM of the district. To become a Police Commissioner, it is necessary to first become an IPS officer. For this one has to clear prelims, mains and interview under UPSC Civil Services Examination. After working as an IPS officer at the rank of ASP, DSP or SP, commissioner is made on the basis of experience.</p>
