Bharatnatyam dancer Sonal Mansingh, honored with Padma Vibhushan, expressed her displeasure and wrote, ‘This Bharatnatyam of Ananya should be a lesson for filmmakers, actors and musicians to learn to respect our traditions. Anything that you do not have knowledge or training in, should not be done just for show. In Hollywood films, dancers who have been trained for ballet dance are used, there the actors are not made to dance just like that. It is sad to see such lack of respect in Bollywood. Being a Bharatnatyam dancer, I am hurt.

Padma Shri awarded dancer Pratibha Prahlad said, ‘Ananya’s way of doing Bharatnatyam seemed as if this tradition has been made just a thing for show. Bharatanatyam is not a trend, rather it is a 3000 year old spiritual and cultural art, which has been taken forward by gurus and artists through years of practice. When it is done without proper training and respect, its soul is lost and it becomes just an imitation.

Apart from this, Bharatanatyam guru Rama Vaidyanathan said, ‘If you have not taken training in any dance form, then you should not try to do it. If Bharatanatyam is to be shown in the film, then an actress should be taken who has proper training in it. We have many such artists.

Father Chunky Pandey supported

However, amid these criticisms, Ananya Pandey’s father and actor Chunky Pandey supported her and said in a conversation with E Time, ‘I think people took it completely wrong. It was never made to show pure Bharatnatyam. It was a fusion performance, as is often seen in college social or cultural events. It takes many years of hard work and training to learn Bharatanatyam. It requires about 20 years of hard work and discipline. This is a very technical and difficult dance form.

He further said, ‘This is a fusion of traditional and futuristic dance forms. It should not be seen like a classical dance recital. I would just like to tell people to first watch the film and understand its context, then form their opinion.
