Why Asthma Gets Worse in Winter: Bronchial asthma is a chronic respiratory disease, in which there is continuous swelling in the respiratory tubes. This disease is once again in the news, because Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Shri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on January 5 after suffering from breathing problem. According to Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the hospital, his bronchial asthma symptoms had increased slightly due to the effect of cold and pollution, hence he was kept in the hospital as a precautionary measure. The hospital administration said that his condition is stable and the treatment is responding well.

What is bronchial asthma?

According to the Global Initiative for Asthma, the main symptoms of asthma include frequent wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing at night or in the morning. In this disease, the airways become narrow, they become swollen and excess mucus starts forming, which makes it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs. Symptoms can sometimes be mild and sometimes severe.

Particles like PM2.5 and PM10 present in the air further increase the inflammation of asthma. Apart from this, viral infections like flu and cold spread more in this season. People spend more time indoors in the winter, where dust, mold, pet hair and poor ventilation can also trigger asthma.
