Iran shoots down American AWACS aircraft in Saudi

Amid the ongoing war in the Middle East, Iran on Sunday (March 29, 2026) claimed to have shot down one of its AWACS aircraft using ballistic missiles and attack drones at America’s Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Iran’s government news agency IRNA shared a post on social media platform X. In the post, Iranian News Agency shared the before and after picture of the US Air Force AWACS aircraft being destroyed in the attack. 10 American employees were also injured in this attack by Iran.

Iran’s government news agency IRNA wrote in its post, ‘The pictures released after the destruction of America’s AWACS aircraft clearly show that contrary to the alleged claims made by the Americans, their air defense systems are not even capable of protecting their most important military resources.’

A day earlier Iran had claimed to have shot down American F-16

On Saturday (March 28, 2026), a day before the claim of destroying the American AWACS aircraft at Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had claimed to have shot down an F-16 fighter plane of the US Air Force. IRGC said that Iran has shot down another American F-16 fighter plane in the battlefield.

However, America’s Central Command CENTCOM has completely rejected the claim made by Iran’s army and termed it as a lie. Centcom said that Iran has not shot down any American fighter plane on the battlefield.

Iran has earlier also made claims regarding US and Israeli fighter planes

After the war in the Middle East with America and Israel that started on February 28, 2026, Iran has claimed to have shot down American and Israeli planes several times. According to the report of Far News, Iran claimed on March 22, 2026 that an American F-15 fighter plane was targeted by surface-to-air missiles of the Iranian Air Defense Force on the country’s southern coast near the Strait of Hormuz.

Apart from this, Iran claimed to have shot down America’s advanced fifth generation F-35 fighter aircraft, F-16 fighter aircraft and also destroyed the American THAAD radar system. However, the US Central Command CENTCOM is completely rejecting any claim of Iran causing harm to America and is calling all Iran’s claims false.

Iran claimed on Friday (March 27, 2026) that it had caused heavy damage to an American aircraft during a missile and drone attack on an American airbase located in Saudi Arabia. According to reports, these attacks took place at Prince Sultan Airbase, where America’s E-3 Air Warning and Control System (AWACS) was deployed along with other defense systems. In the Iranian attack, the AWACS was divided into two pieces and its entire structure has been destroyed, only the front and rear parts are left.

According to the report of Iran’s Press TV, Iran allegedly carried out the attack on America’s Prince Sultan Air Base located in Saudi Arabia with the help of 6 ballistic missiles and 29 attack drones.

10 American employees injured in Iranian attack, two in critical condition

According to the report of the Associated Press, at least 10 American employees have been injured in this powerful attack by Iran using ballistic missiles and drones, out of which the condition of two is very serious.

According to initial reports, many refueling planes were also damaged in this attack. However, the American Central Command (CENTCOM) has not yet given any official statement regarding this attack.

What did Marco Rubio say?
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US could achieve its military objectives in the war against Iran without any ground troops, while Washington is considering sending additional ground troops to West Asia despite talks with Iran.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting of foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7), the US Secretary of State said that we will destroy all the military capabilities of the Islamic Republic to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Rubio said, “We will destroy their navy, their air force and their missile launchers so that they cannot use these things as cover to get nuclear weapons.”

America is considering sending 10,000 ground troops
The Wall Street Journal quoted a US War Department official as saying that Washington is considering sending an additional 10,000 ground troops to West Asia during talks with Tehran, which are likely to include the 82nd Airborne Division as well as infantry and armored vehicles. Rubio further indicated that the duration of the conflict was expected to be short and that it would end in a matter of weeks rather than months.
