Prithvi Theaters ran for 16 years till 1960. 2,662 shows were done in 5,982 days. Prithviraj Kapoor played the lead role in every single show, that is, on an average, one show every third day. However, it had to be closed in 1960 due to the ill health of Prithviraj Kapoor. Prithviraj Kapoor left this world on 29 May 1971.

Prithviraj Kapoor was posthumously awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the biggest award of Hindi cinema, in 1972 for his significant contribution to cinema and theatre. However, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1954 and 1956 and the ‘Padma Bhushan’ award from the Government of India in 1969.

Shammi Kapoor was born on 21 October 1931 in Mumbai. His real name was Shamsher Raj Kapoor. Father Prithviraj Kapoor had already made a name in the world of theater and films, and brother Raj Kapoor was the emerging face of the industry at that time. Shammi Kapoor’s early studies were done in Kolkata, where Prithviraj Kapoor used to do theater. When the family returned to Mumbai, Shammi also joined the Earth Theater. It was from here that he started acting. Here he used to work as a junior artist and he used to get monthly salary only 50 rupees.

As a child, he learned classical music, but his interest was towards Western Music, which later saw a lot in his dancing style.

Film career

His film career started with ‘Jeevan Jyoti’ in 1953, but the failure of 18 consecutive films disappointed him. But then I came to ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekha’ in 1957.

According to Journalist Rauf Ahmed, who wrote Shammi Kapoor’s biography ‘Shammi Kapoor: The Game Changer’, Dev Anand was first signed for this film, but he refused to work with Amita. Director Nasir Hussain did not want to take Shammi Kapoor in the lead role. But Shammi took him to dinner, and the conversation there changed the director’s thinking.

Shammi Kapoor’s stardom in Era

Shammi Kapoor’s stardom reached heights with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ of 1959 and then 1961’s ‘Junglee’. The song ‘Yahoo’ from the movie ‘Junglee’! Talking about personal life, in 1955, Shammi Kapoor married actress Geeta Bali in a very filmy style. According to Rauf Ahmed, there was a difference in the age of Shammi and Geeta Bali.
