Government School Report: Government schools used to be the first choice of millions of families, but now the picture is changing rapidly. The new report of the Ministry of Education shows that a large number of parents are getting their children admitted in private schools instead of government schools. In the last two years, the names of lakhs of children were removed from government schools, while the number of students in private schools has continuously increased. This change is not limited to just one state, but has been seen in many big states of the country. So let us know in which states of the country the condition of government schools is the worst.

What is the new report of the Education Ministry?

Unified District Information System for Education Plus is the official digital database of the Ministry of Education. Through this, data related to admission of students, number of teachers, number of schools and basic facilities is collected in schools across the country. According to the report, in the year 2025-26, a total of 24.72 crore students were registered in schools from primary to secondary level across the country. At the same time, in 2023-24 this number was around 24.80 crores. There was not much difference in the total admissions, but a big change was seen in the figures of government and private schools.

Shortage of 86 lakh students in government schools

According to the report, 12.75 crore students were studying in government schools in 2023-24. In the year 2025-26 this number decreased to 11.89 crores. A decrease of about 86 lakh students was recorded in two years. With this, the number of students in private schools increased from 9 crore to 9.89 crore. About 88 lakh new students took admission in private schools.

In which states of the country is the condition of government schools the worst?

1. Most students study in government schools in Bihar, but here too a decline was recorded in admissions. There were 1.71 crore students in the year 2023-24, which reduced to 1.66 crore in 2025-26.

2. The number of students in government schools in Uttar Pradesh decreased from 1.48 crore to 1.41 crore. There was a reduction of 7.07 lakh students in two years.

3. The number of students in Madhya Pradesh decreased from 81.28 lakh to 79.70 lakh.

4. Admission in government schools in Rajasthan decreased from 77.82 lakh to 74.49 lakh. There was a reduction of about 3.32 lakh students here.

5. There was a decline in admission in government schools in Maharashtra also. The number of students here decreased from 51.08 lakh to about 49.79 lakh.

6. West Bengal was the state where admissions in government schools increased. The number of students here increased from 1.49 crore to 1.54 crore. Here about 4.61 lakh new students joined government schools.

What was the change in the number of government and private schools?

In the year 2025-26, the number of government schools across the country decreased to 10,05,245, whereas in 2023-24 it was 10,13,322.

There is big news for the poor and needy people who are dreaming of getting their children admitted in private schools of Delhi. The Directorate of Education, Delhi Government has conducted a computerized draw for admission in nursery, KG and first class in private schools for the academic session 2026-27. This draw was conducted for EWS, DG and children with special needs i.e. CWSN category. Let us tell you that in this program held at the Old Secretariat, Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood conducted the draw. During this, many parents themselves came on the stage and pressed the button.

What is the government’s planning?

According to the Education Minister, the Delhi government wants that every poor and needy child should get a chance to study in a good private school. He said that this time the admission process has been made clearer and easier than before. Now the application has been verified through Aadhaar card based technology. Due to this, there is a ban on making multiple applications in the name of the same child or giving wrong information. The government says that this will benefit the real needy children.

Seats increased in schools

It is noteworthy that this year the number of seats in private schools has also increased. Last year, 2219 schools were included in this scheme, whereas this time 2308 schools have been included. Seats in EWS and DG category have increased to 48092. Whereas, 7609 seats have been kept in CWSN category. Overall, this time 55701 seats are available, which is 5185 more than last year.

How many applications were received?

According to the information, Rekha Gupta government received more than 1 lakh 39 thousand applications this time. Of these, most of the applications came from EWS and DG categories. In the CWSN category also, more families applied than last year.

Keep these things in mind

The Education Department has made it clear that once the draw is out and the result is frozen, there will be no change in it. The children who have been selected are immediately allotted schools. Scrutiny of documents will start in the next three days. This time many documents will be verified on mobile only, so that parents do not have to make repeated visits to schools and offices.

So many seats are reserved for the poor

Let us tell you that this system has been running in Delhi for many years. Under the Right to Education Act, about 25 percent of seats in private schools are kept for poor, underprivileged and children with special needs. Under this rule, schools are allotted to children every year through a draw. This time the government claims that the entire process has been more transparent and easier than before.
