The Karnataka government is preparing to ban the activities of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in government schools and college campuses in the state. State government minister Priyank Kharge said in this regard on Thursday (October 16, 2025) that the Karnataka Cabinet has decided to bring new rules to ban the activities of RSS.

A day before this statement of Minister Priyank Kharge, on Wednesday (October 15, 2025), Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said that his government is considering ways to ensure that no organization harasses people.

Minister Priyank Kharge gave information

Priyank Kharge told news agency PTI after the cabinet meeting, ‘The rules that we are going to bring will be related to public places, government schools, colleges, government premises, government-owned institutions and aided institutions. We will make a new rule by bringing together the orders issued earlier by the Home Department, Law Department and Education Department. In the next two to three days, this new rule will be implemented within the ambit of the law and the Constitution.

If you want to do anything, you will have to take permission from the government – Kharge

This decision of the Karnataka government is being considered as a big step towards banning the activities of RSS in government and government-aided schools and colleges of the state. Kharge further said, ‘We cannot control any organization, but from now on no organization will be able to do anything of its own free will in public places or on the streets. If you want to do anything, you will have to take permission from the government.

Priyank Kharge wrote a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge had earlier written a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah demanding a ban on RSS activities in government schools, colleges and state-owned temples. He had alleged that RSS was influencing the minds of the youth and promoting ideology against the Constitution.

In a letter written to the Chief Minister, Kharge requested that like Tamil Nadu, such restrictions should be implemented in Karnataka also. After Kharge’s letter, Siddaramaiah directed the Chief Secretary to review the action taken on this matter.

RSS Ban: The debate regarding Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has intensified in Karnataka. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given instructions regarding the RSS program that RSS branches should not be established in government and government-aided schools, public grounds or other government properties. The first major ban on RSS was imposed after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948. The then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had imposed this ban on 4 February 1948. His allegation was that RSS was instigating communal tension. This ban was removed in 1949.

During this period the RSS was banned again as it was considered a threat to the authority of the government. Babri Masjid after demolition

After the demolition of Babri Masjid on 6 December 1992, the central government led by Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao had banned RSS along with organizations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. Later this ban was removed by the High Court.

Priyank, writing a letter to the CM, said that an organization named Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is using government and aided schools and public government grounds to set up shakhas and inculcate negative thoughts in the minds of children and youth towards the unity of the country and raise slogans against the ideals of the Constitution.
