Early Detection of Prostate Cancer: Like the rest of the world, prostate cancer is increasing rapidly in Britain too. It has now become the most common cancer in British men and is claiming more than 12,000 lives each year. Its most dangerous thing is that in the initial stage the disease progresses almost without any symptoms. Most men do not know they have cancer until it has spread to other parts of the body.

Late detection of more cases has become a major cause of concern for doctors and cancer organizations. Meanwhile, Britain’s National Screening Committee again rejected the proposal to start prostate cancer screening on a large scale. This decision has drawn sharp reactions from Rishi Sunak, Piers Morgan, Sir Chris Hoy and many cancer organizations.

Why did you express your displeasure?

Rishi Sunak, who has a prostate cancer diagnosis, has been the harshest critic of the decision. In one article he described it as a “lost opportunity to save lives”. He says that the committee ignored the progress made in modern screening techniques and MRI based diagnostics. Sunak argues that because prostate cancer grows without symptoms in the early stages, men cannot catch the disease based on symptoms alone, they need screening. Piers Morgan and Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy also called the decision not to increase screening a dangerous mistake. Chris Hoy’s father died of prostate cancer, so his opposition is even more obvious.

Why is the first screening model raising expectations?

Many experts say that NSC’s arguments are now based on old data. Professor Hasim Ahmed of Imperial College London and Professor Mark Emberton of UCL have long shown that the PSA test and MRI scans catch most cancers in their early stages. Reduces the number of unnecessary biopsies by 25 to 40 percent and reduces the risk of overdiagnosis. Large studies such as the PROMIS trial and MRI-first models in multiple hospitals have consistently reinforced these results. The Euro 42 million Transform trial, starting in 2025, which will involve up to 3 lakh men, could prove to be a turning point in this debate in the coming years.

How is it possible to prevent prostate cancer?

It is not possible to completely prevent any cancer, but according to experts, several steps can reduce the risk to a great extent, especially in the case of fast-spreading and late-caught cancers. Experts say that the risk in black men is on average double. If father or brother had prostate cancer before 60, the risk increases 3 to 4 times. In such men, it is advisable to start PSA monitoring from the age of 45 to 50.

What is research called?

Research from around the world shows that excess fat increases the risk of prostate cancer, regular exercise reduces inflammation and balances hormones and consumption of processed and burnt meat increases the risk of deadly prostate cancer. Experts recommend taking tomatoes, green vegetables, healthy fats (like nuts, olive oil, fatty fish).

Maintaining correct Vitamin D levels

Research from Cambridge and Oxford suggests that men with very low vitamin D levels were found to have a higher risk of rapidly spreading prostate cancer.

limit smoking and alcohol

According to European research, smoking increases the risk of death from prostate cancer. Drinking excessive alcohol increases the chances of tumors.

What do experts say

Experts agree on one thing: “By the time prostate cancer shows symptoms, it is often too late.” Therefore, the way to protect yourself is to know your risk profile, regular PSA check after 45 to 50 if necessary, MRI, attention to weight, diet and Vitamin D, abstinence from smoking or alcohol and gene testing if there is history in the family.

In today’s time, the concern of health has become the first priority of everyone. In such a situation, awareness about diseases like prostate cancer is also increasing. It is worth noting that this cancer affects men, especially men.

How to identify this disease?

Many times this disease increases gradually, so it is very important to identify it and get it properly treated in the initial stages. If the right steps are taken on time, then this disease can be controlled and the patient can live a healthy life. For this, it is important that people understand the symptoms of prostate cancer and methods of treatment.

This thing came out in research

According to the American National Cancer Institute, the prostate body has a small gland, which is part of the men’s reproductive system. This gland is under the bladder and around the urinary tube of men. When the cells in this gland start growing uncontrollably, it is called prostate cancer.

Never ignore these symptoms

During most cases, there are no clear symptoms of this cancer in early times, but some common symptoms may appear. If you have frequent urination, burning sensation or pain in urination, difficulty in preventing urination and more frequent urination at night, then you should check immediately. Apart from this, some patients may also have pain in the waist or hip.

These tests reveal the problem

This disease occurs especially with aging and mostly men above 50 years are at risk. Regular checkup is very important for this. Doctors perform some special tests to check prostate cancer. These include digital rectal examinations, in which doctors examine the prostate. Apart from this, the amount of substance called PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is measured in the blood. More investigation is required when PSA increases. If the disease is caught in the initial stage, it is easy to cure. There are many options in treatment. These include surgery, radiation therapy and hormone therapy etc. For some patients, doctors also recommend monitoring and regular check -up.
