A balanced diet is very important for a healthy and fit body. It should contain proteins, vitamins, carbs, fats and minerals in the right quantity. In such a situation, the role of protein is very important in repairing the cells and tissues present in the body. That is why people pay maximum attention to protein in their diet.

In such a situation, people generally prefer non-veg food for protein, but most of those who do not eat non-veg consider pulses as a good source of protein. But recently the gastroenterologist of Fortis has told that pulses are not a good source of protein and those who eat them thinking so are absolutely wrong. Let us know whether pulses are really a better source of protein?

Why are pulses not a good source of protein?

Dr. Shubham Vatsya, gastroenterologist and hepatologist of Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, who is an expert in diet and food, posted a video on his Instagram and said that pulses are not a good source of protein. She says that “if you think of lentils as a rich source of protein, then you are wrong” because lentils do not contain essential amino acids. Therefore it is not able to fulfill the protein requirement of the body.

How much protein is there in lentils?

Dr. Vatsya says that pulses contain some protein but it is not enough for the body. 24 grams of protein is found in 100 grams of raw lentils, which is less than the protein found in 100 grams of chicken. If we talk about cooked pulses, one bowl of cooked pulses contains 5 grams of protein and 100 grams of raw pulses makes 4 to 5 bowls of pulses. In such a situation, you will have to eat 5 bowls of pulses to get 25 grams of protein, which is generally impossible.

What is the better option instead of pulses?

The cells present in the body need protein to be repaired. In such a situation, you can eat many more protein rich things instead of pulses. Non-vegetarian people can eat fish, egg and chicken, whereas vegetarians should eat more things like milk, curd and cheese for protein.
