There is an outcry due to floods in Punjab these days. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi reached Amritsar on Monday (September 15) in the morning. Here, he first did Gurudwara Shri Samadh Baba Budha Ji Sahib, Ramdas in Matha Teka and Ardas for the prosperity and peace of the state. At the gurudwara, he met Sangat and came to know about the locals.

Rahul Gandhi is also visiting the flood affected areas of Punjab today. It has been told by the Congress that during this time he will meet farmers, laborers and affected families and listen to their problems. The floods in many districts of the state have severely affected the lives of the people. Thousands of acres of agricultural land has been submerged in water, while the contact of many villages has been cut from the main routes.

Punjab’s situation is very bad due to floods

Punjab is currently struggling with the biggest flood in many years. This flood has come due to heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir along with the boom of Sutlej, Vyas and Ravi rivers. Due to continuous rains, seasonal drains also came in spate, which worsened the situation.

So far 56 people have died

According to the news agency PTI, 56 people have died in this disaster so far and the crops standing in about 1.98 lakh hectares have been completely destroyed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an aerial survey of flood affected areas on 9 September and took stock of the situation. After this, he announced an additional assistance of Rs 1,600 crore to Punjab for flood relief, which is different from the already released package of Rs 12,000 crore.

Punjab is in the grip of severe floods these days. 1,996 villages in 23 districts of the state have completely submerged in water. So far 46 people have died in this natural disaster and the standing crops in 1.75 lakh hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed. Due to heavy rains, Ravi, Sutlej and Vyas rivers were boom, which made the situation further challenging.

According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the flood -affected district Gurdaspur on 9 September. They will meet the affected people and farmers directly and will take stock of the situation. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, Border Security Force, Punjab Police and District officials are engaged in relief and rescue work. So far, 22,854 people have been taken to a safe place. 200 relief camps have been set up across the state, where more than 7,000 displaced people have taken shelter.

Water level of Ghaggar river on danger mark

The water level of Pong Dam has reached 1,394.19 feet, which is four feet above the upper limit. The water level of Bhakra Dam was recorded at 1,678.14 feet. The water level of Ghaggar river has also reached above 750 feet.

What did Punjab Finance Minister Harpreet Singh Cheema say?

State Finance Minister Harpreet Singh Cheema described it as the most serious flood of five decades. He said that about 2,000 villages have been affected in Punjab and neighboring hill states due to heavy rains. A total of 3.87 lakh people have been affected. A 50 -year -old man died in a strong current in F IROZPUR district.

Loss of crops in 18 districts of Punjab

The flood has caused extensive agricultural loss in 18 districts. Apart from this, houses, animals and infrastructure have also suffered heavy losses. Officials are telling that relief work is going on at a war footing, 24 NDRF teams and two SDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations with 144 boats.

Along with relief and rescue operations in the state, the water level is constantly being monitored. Officials said that measures are being taken to control water flow in Pong and Bhakra Dam. This flood of Punjab is considered one of the most serious and widespread disasters ever, and relief work is going on.

The biggest heavy rain of the flood is. Excessive rains in the upper areas and heavy monsoon rains in Jammu and Kashmir filled the catchment areas of rivers. The catchment area is the area from where the rain water of other places flows and goes to the rivers. Due to which the rivers started flowing with more water. Water was released from the dams, which increased the flow in the downstream.

Another reason for floods in Punjab, unplanned urbanization, encroachment along the sides of rivers and insufficient drainage system have worsened the situation. In many cities of Punjab, the drains and sewer systems were not cleaned on time, due to which rain water filled the roads, houses. Floods dependent on agriculture have not only destroyed crops, but have also affected the lives and property of the people badly. The government has taken several measures for flood control, such as strengthening the embankments and providing controlled flow of water from dams, but these efforts are yet to be fully effective.
