Punjab is called the ‘grain bowl of India’. This is a plains which is known for its fertile land and rich agriculture. But in recent times, the flood situation in many parts of Punjab, especially in the monsoon season, has surprised people. The question arises that when Punjab is a field area, where does so much water come from here? Which rivers are responsible for this flood? So let’s know that the root causes of this problem.

Outcrying floods in Punjab

Punjab has been struggling with heavy flood crisis for the last several days. Where on one hand, where more than 1300 villages have been submerged in water, millions of people have become homeless and the crop standing in thousands of acres has been ruined. Roads, bridges and houses have suffered heavy damage. So more than 30 people have also died there. Let us know that five major rivers flow in Punjab, whose name is Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum. These rivers originate from the Himalayas and their water level rises rapidly due to heavy rains during the monsoon. Due to melting snow in the Himalayan regions and heavy rains, the amount of water in these rivers increases, which reach the plains and takes the form of floods.

Where did so much water come from in Punjab

The question arises that when Punjab is a field area, where does so much water come from here? So the biggest reason for this is heavy rains i.e. due to heavy rains in high areas, it has also affected the plains and the Sutlej river has been the main reason for floods in Punjab. Sutlej, which originates from Mansarovar Lake in Tibet, passes through many districts of Punjab like Ropar, Ludhiana and Ferozepur. Excess water is released from Bhakra Dam, which causes floods in villages and cities on the banks of Sutlej. Apart from this, the increased water in Beas, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum rivers also caused damage to some parts of Punjab.

Turn rain became the main reason for floods

The biggest heavy rain of the flood is. Excessive rains in the upper areas and heavy monsoon rains in Jammu and Kashmir filled the catchment areas of rivers. The catchment area is the area from where the rain water of other places flows and goes to the rivers. Due to which the rivers started flowing with more water. Water was released from the dams, which increased the flow in the downstream.

This is also a big reason for flood

Another reason for floods in Punjab, unplanned urbanization, encroachment along the sides of rivers and insufficient drainage system have worsened the situation. In many cities of Punjab, the drains and sewer systems were not cleaned on time, due to which rain water filled the roads, houses. Floods dependent on agriculture have not only destroyed crops, but have also affected the lives and property of the people badly. The government has taken several measures for flood control, such as strengthening the embankments and providing controlled flow of water from dams, but these efforts are yet to be fully effective.
