Punjab National Bank: Shares of Punjab National Bank (PNB) will be in focus on Monday as the bank reported a loan fraud of Rs 2434 crore in its regulatory filing after the market closed on Friday, December 26. The bank has also informed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) about this. This case of loan fraud is related to two companies – SREI Equipment Finance Limited (SEFL) and SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited (SIFL).

In the information given to the exchanges, the bank said that SREI Equipment Finance Limited (SEFL) has committed fraud of Rs 1,240.94 crore and SREI Infrastructure Finance Limited (SIFL) has committed fraud of Rs 1,193.06 crore. That means both these companies have not yet repaid the money taken from the bank by taking loan. However, PNB clearly said that it has made 100 percent provisioning for the outstanding amount of both the loans. It has also been told in the filing that these companies have been resolved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) under the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP).

Punjab National Bank shares

PNB shares were already under pressure on Friday, closing at Rs 120.35, down 0.50 per cent from the previous closing price of Rs 120.95 on BSE. PNB shares have remained strong for a long time. It has increased by about 13 percent in the last six months and by 17 percent year-on-year in 2025. Technical indicators show that the stock is currently trading in the neutral zone. According to Trendline data, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) is at 50.8, while the Money Flow Index is at 55.4. Both indicators indicate that the stock is in the mid-range – neither overbought nor oversold.

Things to do before 30th November: The month of November is about to end. With the end of the month, the timeline for completing many important tasks will also end. In such a situation, you will be left out of taking advantage of many banking facilities, so there is still four days time, complete these tasks immediately. Let us know what tasks you have to complete before the end of the month of November:-

submit life certificate

In order to continue receiving pension on time, all pensioners in India have to submit their Life Certificate (LC) or Jeevan Pramana to the pension granting agencies on or before the deadline of 30th November every year.

Central and state government employees receiving pension can either personally go to the concerned authorities and submit the documents or now they also have the option to submit digital LC within the deadline. If you do not submit your life certificate by 30th November, your pension may be stopped. In case of delay, your pending pension will come only when the LC sent by you gets approved by the Central Pension Processing Center (CPPC).

Deadline for updating KYC

If you are also a customer of Punjab National Bank (PNB), then you too must have received a reminder message to update KYC (Know Your Customer) by September 30, 2025. If KYC is not updated by this date, your account will be banned and you will not be able to make necessary transactions from it. It is very easy to update KYC.

If you want, you can update KYC through PNB ONE mobile app, internet banking, email or SMS, WhatsApp banking or by visiting your nearest branch. Updating KYC is not just a regulatory requirement, but it is also necessary to verify identity, prevent fraud and maintain continuous access to all banking services. Due to security reasons, if KYC details are not updated, sometimes there is a risk of account getting frozen, which can affect withdrawal, KYC transfer and other services.

Transfer from NPS to UPS

Central government employees are being given another chance to shift from the National Pension System (NPS) to the newly launched Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). Earlier its deadline was from June 30 to September 30, which was later extended to November 30, 2025 and now perhaps this may be the last chance.

You can shift from NPS to UPS completely on your own will, which will have a huge impact on your retirement planning. Many employees find UPS more beneficial because of its defined-benefit structure and more stable income after retirement. Failure to opt-in before November 30 means that by default they will continue to work under the existing NPS structure.

Rbi on bank minimum balance: The Reserve Bank of India has denied any restriction on arbitrary minimum balance by banks. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said that the central bank leaves the decision to banks how much minimum balance they decide. This statement from RBI has come at a time when ICICI Bank has increased the average monthly balance for the new savings account opening from 1 August 2025 to Rs 50,000.

The minimum balance in metro and urban branches has been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000, while in semi-urban branches, it has been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 and in rural areas it has been increased to Rs 10,000.

RBI refuses to interfere

However, these changes will only apply to new customers, while the new minimum balance rules for old account holders will not apply until the notification is issued by the bank. If customers do not meet the terms of this average balance, then penalty will be imposed on them by the bank.

Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra said on Monday that banks are free to fix the minimum balance in savings accounts and it does not fall under RBI regulatory jurisdiction. He said this in a conversation with reporters during a ceremony organized on financial inclusion at Gojiaia Gram Panchayat in Mehsana district of Gujarat.

What did Sanjay Malhotra say?

Asked about increasing the amount of minimum balance required for private bank ICICI’s savings account, Sanjay Malhotra said, “RBI has left the decision to decide the minimum balance on each bank. Some banks have kept it Rs 10,000, some have kept Rs 2,000 and some have given the customers. ICICI Bank has increased the minimum balance limit for those opening new savings accounts from 1 August.

Psu banks earning: The country’s government banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) have earned a record profit of Rs 44,218 crore in the first quarter of 2025-26. Whereas in the June quarter of a year ago, all 12 public sector banks together made a profit of Rs 39,974 crore. That is, in total, the profit has increased by Rs 4,244 crore.

State Bank made the highest profit

SBI was at the top of the list. The bank earned a net profit of Rs 19,160 crore in the April-June quarter. This is 12 percent more than the first quarter of FY 2025. That is, in both size and profit case, the country’s largest lender still has control on public banking market. Indian Overseas Bank finished second. Its net profit was Rs 1,111 crore with an increase of 76 percent. At the same time, 48 percent increased to Punjab and Sindh Bank’s profit of Rs 269 crore.

These banks also earned profit

Indian Bank’s net profit increased by 23.7 percent to Rs 2,973 crore. At the same time, Bank of Maharashtra earned a profit of Rs 1,593 crore with a jump of 23.2 percent. The profit of Central Bank of India increased by 32.8 percent to Rs 1,169 crore.

PNB lags behind in profit race

The only Punjab National Bank is the only government bank whose performance has declined in the June quarter. PNB’s net profit in the first quarter of FY 2026 declined by Rs 3,252 crore to Rs 1,675 crore from Rs 3,252 crore for the same period last year. However, all banks’ performance in different sectors vary, but the results of the first quarter reflect the pace of flexibility and improvement of public sector lenders.

How do banks earn money?

Investment on bank loan, investment in government securities, bonds and shares, interbank loans, digital banking, treasury operation, service fee and fees make money in all these ways.

Punjab national bank: Punjab National Bank (PNB) has given great relief to its account holders. The bank has announced that no penalty will be charged for not maintaining a minimum average balance in the savings account. This decision of the bank will provide relief to the people from the concern of keeping the minimum balance in the account.

The bank says that the aim of this step is to promote financial inclusion and make banking more accessible for all. This new rule of the bank has come into force from July 1, 2025. This will help women, farmers and lower income families especially. Last month, Canara Bank also removed the need to maintain average monthly balance (Amb) on all its accounts from the month of June.

Why do banks impose minimum balance rule?

The bank is therefore asks to maintain the minimum average balance in its account so that its operational expenses can be met and customers can spend various services such as online banking, ATM, branch, etc. Many times the bank also provides facilities like more interest rate, free ATM transaction to customers on maintaining minimum balance.

At the same time, the bank charge a fine from its customers for not maintaining minimum balance. Many times, if the minimum average balance is not maintained in the account for a long time, the bank account is closed. Broadly understanding, the bank is a business, which depends on deposits and penalty to meet their expenses.

According to the RBI rules regarding minimum balance, the bank always keep in mind that the balance does not go to negative due to penalty in the account if there is no minimum balance maintained in the account.

Banks also earn from these things

However, many times banks remove this rule so that people from far-flung rural areas and low income are easy to use banking services without any fine. With this, the cost of the bank’s operational cost comes out of many other things such as SMS alert fees, service fees, transaction fees, interest, etc.

After a major cut of 50 basis points in the repo rate from RBI, Punjab National Bank has decided to cut loan interest rates, giving relief to its customers. PNB has now reduced the repo linked landing rate i.e. 50 basis points in RLLR. Giving information about this decision on behalf of the bank on social media platform X, it has been told that the new interest rates will be effective from June 9 of this month. & Nbsp;

That is, after this decision of the bank, the home loan will start 7.45 percent annually while the vehicle loan will start from 7.80 percent annually. It is believed that this move of PNAB will reduce the EMI of the car loan, home loan and small business loan customers.

 customers will get benefit

At the time of Corona, the RBI kept the repo rate at four percent from May 2020 to April 2022. But after this the central bank increased the repo rate to 6.5 percent. However, for the last two years, RBI has cut interest rates and has seen a continuous cuts for the last three times. This decision of RBI has benefited greatly to small businessmen, including car-houses. & Nbsp;

After this announcement of PNB & nbsp; Customers whose loans are already associated with RLLR, their EMI will automatically come down to the next billing.

Many banks reduced the landing rate

Significantly, after the new cut in the rate of RBI’s repo rate, many banks have decided to cut the landing rate. MCLR was cut by HDFC on 7 June itself. Bank of Baroda has reduced the Baroda Repo Based Lading Rate from 8.65 percent & nbsp; to 8.15 percent. Apart from this, Indian Bank has also reduced RBLR i.e. repo linked benchmark landing rate from 8.70 percent to 8.20 percent.

It is very common for banks to stuck the loan given to people. But when the loan gets stuck, it becomes very difficult to recover it at times. But five public sector banks have made a strategy together, so that the trapped loan can be recovered. Five banks, including SBI, PNB and Bank of Baroda, are working on a plan to create a common collection agency for recovery of retail and MSME loan of less than Rs 5 crore.

 Steps together for loan recovery

According to a report by the Economic Times, a firm will be created by these five public sector banks at present- PSB Alliance Private Limited, which will be based on the Prue of Concept and will later join other banks. The aim of making the lines of National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited is that this will help banks to focus on main backing activities. Especially, in a case when a single loan taker has taken money from many banks.

Loan recovery will now be a special way

At this time, only three to four government banks are being outsourced for recovering the loans stranded. In such a situation, once this agency is formed, banks will help in focusing on the stuck loans of big defaulters instead of these small loans.

It is worth noting that many such cases have been reported, including the PNB fraud case, when the bank has been able to know about the fraud. In such a situation, if there will be a separate agency for the revolting of these small loans in time, then the bank will get a full chance to focus on those taking their big loans. As soon as the agency starts work for these five banks, it is expected that the rest of the bank will take its help.
