There was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake on Sunday (17 August 2025) in Sulawesi, Indonesia. According to the German Geology Research Center (GFZ), the earthquake center was at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 mi). So far, the authorities have not reported any casualties or any loss. The situation is being monitored. This is the second incident recorded this week, on August 12, there was a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in West Papua province.

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake came around 5:24 pm local time (08:24 GMT), which was located about 193 km north-west from Abepura city of Papua in Papua. Earlier on August 7, the 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck 106 km deep. Constant tremors have made it clear that Indonesia is still facing highly seismic threat.

Why do earthquakes occur again and again in Indonesia?
Indonesia’s complex geological condition makes it seismic hotspots. Large -scale earthquakes in Sumatra and Java region fall in almost every 100 years, while in western Java this cycle can be around 500 years. Tectonic plates in eastern Indonesia move quite rapidly, causing small and moderate earthquakes to occur frequently. Explosive volcanoes are also active due to frequent movements and collisions of plates. For this reason, Indonesia is considered an important part of the ring of fire.
