According to government data, dengue cases have increased continuously in the last few years. While around 44 thousand cases were reported in 2020, in 2023 and 2024 this number crossed 2.3 lakh. Even in 2025, till November, more than 1.13 lakh cases have been registered. Experts believe that the actual figures may be even higher because many cases are not reported.

Now TAK-003 vaccine, known as Qdenga, has been approved in India. It has been allowed to be used by the Expert Committee under the Drug Controller General of India for people between 4 to 60 years of age. This vaccine has been developed by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited of Japan. The most important thing about this vaccine is that it does not matter whether one has had dengue before or not. This was a big challenge in the earlier vaccine. Qdenga is designed to protect against all four dengue virus serotypes, providing more comprehensive protection.

How does it work?

It is given in two doses, between which there is a gap of three months. Clinical trials have found that this vaccine can provide protection for more than four years. The World Health Organization has also considered it useful in areas where the risk of dengue is high. Dr Archana Pate told TOI that India accounts for about one-third of the world’s population that is at risk of dengue. In such a situation, this vaccine can prove to be an important step for public health.

However, experts also believe that this is not a magical solution. The vaccine will definitely reduce the risk of dengue, but cannot eliminate it completely. The severity of dengue often depends on the body’s immune response, especially during a second infection. Another good news is that this vaccine will be produced in India only. For this, Takeda has partnered with Biological E. Limited of Hyderabad, due to which both its availability and price can improve in the coming time. Doctors clearly say that vaccine alone will not help. Preventing mosquitoes from breeding, maintaining cleanliness, timely testing and proper treatment, all these steps are equally important.
