The captain of Afghanistan cricket team has changed. Experienced batsman Hashmatullah Shahidi has suddenly left the captaincy of Afghanistan. He was the captain of Afghanistan in ODI and Test formats. Under his captaincy, Afghanistan recorded many historic victories, but on Wednesday he suddenly resigned from the captaincy. After this, Afghanistan Cricket Board has appointed Rahmat Shah as the new captain of ODI and Test team. Whereas wicketkeeper batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been made the vice-captain of the ODI and Test team.
31-year-old Hashmatullah Shahidi became the captain of the ODI team in the beginning of 2022 and was the captain of the team in the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He was also the captain of Afghanistan’s Test team. Under Shahidi’s captaincy, Afghanistan defeated England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands in the 2023 World Cup.

Shahidi wrote on social media, “Today, with full respect and consent, I am resigning from the captaincy of my team due to personal reasons. It was an honor for me to fulfill the responsibility of a captain. I am proud that I could fulfill it with complete honesty, solidarity and commitment.”

He further said, “By the grace of Allah, the efforts of the officials, coaches and players, we have registered so many victories, won important matches, defeated big teams and brought glory to the team. This is not just my achievement, it is an achievement achieved through teamwork.”

Who is Rahmat Shah, who got the command of Afghanistan team?

33 year old Rahmat Shah is an experienced batsman, who has been playing international cricket for 15 years. He is considered the backbone of Afghanistan’s batting in both Test and ODI. Rahmat Shah has so far played 128 ODI matches and 12 Test matches for Afghanistan. He has 4122 runs in his name in ODI.
