Before the beginning of the new year, Railways has given big relief to the youth preparing for government jobs. Railway Recruitment Board has issued a big update regarding Group D recruitment. For the candidates who have been waiting for this recruitment for a long time, the application date has also come out. This recruitment of Railways has been done to fill 22000 Level One posts across the country, which will give opportunity to lakhs of persons.

Applications will start from January 21

Short notification of Railway Group D recruitment was released on 12 December 2025. Now information about the application process has been given through a new notification. Candidates will be able to apply online from 21 January 2026 to 20 February 2026. The application will be made on the official website of Railways, rrbapply.gov.in.

On which posts will there be recruitment and what will be the qualification?

Under this recruitment, posts will be filled in different departments. The maximum number of posts for Track Maintainer Grade-IV in the Engineering Department is 11000. Apart from this, 5000 posts of Pointsman-B, Assistant TRD in Electronics Department, TL&AC, Operations and Loco Shed related posts are included. A large number of vacancies have also been released in Mechanical and S&T departments. Overall, 22000 posts will be filled under this recruitment process. Whereas for Group D recruitment, it is necessary for the candidate to be 10th pass, apart from this, candidates having National Apprenticeship Certificate from NCVT recognized institute can also apply. Talking about age limit, the minimum age has been fixed at 18 years and maximum 36 years. Apart from this, along with the written examination, physical test will also be taken for this recruitment.

Application Fees and Selection Process

For this recruitment, the application fee for General, OBC and EWS category candidates has been kept at Rs 500. Whereas SC, ST, EBC, women and transgender candidates will have to pay a fee of Rs 250. Whereas the selection for recruitment in Group D will be done in four stages. First a computer based test will be taken. After this there will be physical efficiency test, then document verification and finally medical exam.

In India, recruitment for loco pilots is done from time to time by the Railway Board to fill the vacant posts. Loco pilot is the one who runs the train engine i.e. locomotive, i.e. the driver of the train. Do you know how many loco pilots there are in India? Indian Railways is one of the most important travel modes of the country. Every day thousands of trains transport lakhs of passengers and goods to their destination.

Loco pilots are needed to run this huge and important system, because if the wheels of the train stop, then the country’s economy is also negatively affected. The question is, do we have as many loco pilots as the number of trains running in India, and if so, what is their number?

Number of loco pilots in Indian Railways

Indian Railways is divided into a total of 19 zones. At present the total number of sanctioned posts for loco pilots in Indian Railways is around 1.47 lakh. That means there should be so many drivers as per the system. But the reality is that at present only about 1.15 lakh loco pilots and assistant loco pilots are doing their duty in the Railways. This means that there is a shortage of about 30,000 loco pilots in the Railways, which is a serious challenge for the Indian Railways.

Recruitment process to fill vacant posts

To fill the vacant posts of Loco Pilots, the Indian Railway Board had issued a recruitment notification for 5,696 posts of Assistant Loco Pilot in January 2024. After this, in June 2024, the number of posts was increased more than three times to 18,799. The examination for this recruitment was conducted on time in 2024.

Timeline of Examination and Selection Process

The first phase of this recruitment i.e. CBT-1 examination was held between 25 to 29 November 2024. More than 22 lakh candidates took part in this examination. The recruitment process will move forward in the year 2025. The results of CBT-1 were declared at the beginning of the year. After this, CBT-2 and computer based aptitude test were completed between August and October 2025. Finally, the final result of the recruitment has been released on 3 November 2025.

Qualification to become a loco pilot

10th + ITI
If you have done ITI after 10th, then you can become an Assistant Loco Pilot, but ITI should be in Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics trade recognized by Railways.

10th + Diploma
If you have done 3 years engineering diploma after 10th, then ITI is not required. Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Automobile branches are valid.

BE/B.Tech
Candidates with engineering degree can also become loco pilots. They are considered eligible for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot as well as Technician.

The Ministry of Railways has given great relief to the youth who want crores of jobs in the country. In the recruitment process of the railway, now completely transparency and technology will be used. This will not only benefit the candidates, but the entire process of recruitment will also become fast and fair. The purpose of new changes is to give transparency in the examination, ban on fraud and give jobs to qualified candidates on time.

Now every time there will be no problem of filling the form. Railways has implemented “One Time Registration” i.e. OTR system. With this, by registering once, candidates will be able to apply easily in all the coming recruitment. This is especially news of relief for millions of youth who used to get tired of applying for every recruitment.

Base and face recognition

Railways will now use E-KYC and Real-Time Face Recognition technology to prevent any disturbance in the examination. This means that the identity of the Aadhaar card will be confirmed at the time of examination and by matching the face, it will be confirmed that the examination is giving the same candidate who has filled the form.

Now every year before before, the exam calendar will be available

The Ministry of Railways has now implemented the system of releasing the annual examination calendar for all Group C posts (eg ALP, NTPC, Technician, RPF, Level-1 etc.). With this, the youth will already know when the recruitment will come out, when the applications will start and when will the examination be done.

More than 1.5 crore applications, now process will increase

It was told by the Railways that in 2024, more than 1,08,000 posts were recruited. Among them, crores of applications were received for some major posts like NTPC, ALP, Technician and RPF. Despite such a large number of applications, the Railways has intensified the recruitment process much more than ever. Now the average time for recruitment notification to the examination is 8 months, which will be reduced further in future.

Examination center near home, complete security from mobile jammer

Keeping in mind the convenience of the candidates, the Railways has decided that now the examination center will be within 250 kilometers from the candidate’s house and the maximum distance is kept 500 km. Not only this, 100% mobile jammers have been installed at all centers so that there is no technical fraud. Its impact showed its effect in the June 2025 examination, where no news of any kind of cheating came.

Improvement in internal promotion and waiting list also

Now there will be CBAT and tablet based examination for internal promotion of railway, which will give promotion to qualified employees soon. Youth will be considered as 10th, ITI or National Apprenticeship Certificate for Level-1 posts. Candidates who do not join after appointment, will be given a chance immediately to another candidate from the waiting list. The Railways has also made it clear that there is no complete ban on religious symbols like bangle, bindi, turban or others in the examination. But only after security check, they will be allowed to sit in the examination.
