In this situation, the Government’s Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme is considered a big relief for the farmers. Under this, financial assistance is provided in case of crop failure. Under what circumstances do farmers get compensation?

Under this scheme, losses caused by natural disasters are covered. If crops are damaged due to drought, flood, storm, hailstorm, pests or disease, farmers can claim compensation. The special thing is that even if sowing is not possible due to bad weather or the standing crop is destroyed, farmers can still avail the benefits of this scheme. Apart from this, insurance cover is also available for 14 days for the crops kept in the field to dry after harvesting. During this period, if there is loss due to rain or other natural causes, then farmers can claim compensation.

Who can avail the benefit of this scheme?

The scope of this scheme is very wide. This includes all those farmers who grow notified crops. Whether the farmer does farming on his own land, is a sharecropper or does farming on rent, everyone is eligible for this. If the farmer has given a loan from the bank for the crop, then insurance is automatically added, whereas farmers without loan can also apply for it.

How can I claim?

Under the Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme, farmers have to pay very low premium. The premium is fixed at two percent for Kharif crop, 1.5 percent for Rabi crop and 5 percent for horticulture or commercial crops. The remaining amount is borne by the government, which greatly reduces the financial burden on the farmers. At the same time, if the crop gets damaged, the farmers have to inform it within 72 hours. This information can be given through the insurance company, bank, nearest CSC center or agriculture department. Apart from this, complaint can also be lodged on helpline number 14447. Farmers can also claim compensation online. For this, they have to go to the official portal pmfby.gov.in and choose Report Crop Loss or Registered Claim option. After this, application can be made by filling name, mobile number, bank details and crop loss information.

How is compensation received?

After the claim is registered, the concerned officers go to the spot and assess the damaged crop. After this, a report is prepared based on this and the insurance company approves the compensation. Usually, within 1 to 2 months the compensation amount is transferred directly to the farmer’s bank account.
