In view of the scorching heat and continuously rising temperatures in Rajasthan, the state government has decided to extend the summer holidays of schools. This decision of the government has brought great relief to lakhs of students, parents and teachers. Now the schools of the state will remain closed till June 28, 2026.

Education Department, Bikaner has said that earlier the summer holidays were scheduled from 17th May to 20th June. However, in view of the continuous scorching heat and heatwave situation in many districts of the state, the government has extended the holiday period by seven more days. With this, this year the summer holidays have increased from 35 days to a total of 42 days.

Decision taken amid rising heat

Rajasthan is currently one of the hottest states in the country. In many districts the temperature has reached above 45 degrees Celsius. According to the data of the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Jaisalmer was recorded at 46.4 degrees Celsius, while it was 46 degrees in Barmer, 45.7 degrees in Kota and 45.3 degrees Celsius in Churu.

In view of the impact on the health of the students due to the continuously increasing heat and heat wave, the government has decided to keep the schools closed for the time being. The Education Department believes that sending children to school can be risky in the current weather conditions.

The state government has also given additional powers to school principals. Under the new system, now the school principal will be able to approve leave of up to two days at his discretion. Earlier he had the right to grant only one day leave. The government believes that this will facilitate taking quick decisions according to local conditions.

Earlier the plan was to reduce holidays

State Education Minister Madan Dilawar had earlier proposed to reduce summer holidays. Its objective was to increase the number of teaching days in the academic session to 214 days and improve the quality of education.

Additionally, the government planned to open schools before June 21 so that students and teachers could participate in International Yoga Day events. However, teachers’ organizations had opposed this proposal and had objected to the opening of schools citing severe summer conditions.
