All NDA candidates have won in the voting on five Rajya Sabha seats of Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar got 44 votes on the basis of first preference. However, he could not get the certificate of victory on Monday. Sanjay Gandhi had taken the certificate in his place. Today (March 17, 2026) JDU National Working President Sanjay Jha handed it over to Nitish Kumar.

While handing over the certificate, Sanjay Jha has shared the picture with his X handle. He wrote, “Today, Honorable Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar got the opportunity to hand over the certificate of being elected to the Rajya Sabha. During this, party leader Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh ‘Gandhiji’ was also present. His public life has been dedicated to the service of the citizens and the development of Bihar. From the state to the national level, a newness has always been seen in his thoughts and work.”

‘Nitish Kumar will continue to guide the state government’

Along with giving the certificate of victory, Sanjay Kumar Jha also said a big thing about the future strategy. In his post, he has also made it clear about Nitish Kumar that his presence in Rajya Sabha will give new impetus to the development of Bihar. Congress MLA Surendra Prasad Kushwaha, who abstained from voting in the Rajya Sabha elections, has given clarification through Facebook. He did not reach Bihar Assembly during voting last Monday (March 16, 2026). Now he has told the reason behind this. Surendra Kushwaha has clearly said that on behalf of the Grand Alliance, RJD made a candidate from a class whose votes the Grand Alliance does not get, hence he did not consider it appropriate to vote for it.

On behalf of the Grand Alliance, RJD had made AD Singh the Rajya Sabha candidate. He belongs to Bhumihar caste. When voting took place on Monday, three Congress MLAs and one RJD MLA were missing. There was talk of everyone having contacts in NDA. Meanwhile, Surendra Kushwaha has made it clear that he was not in touch with NDA.

In a clarification through a Facebook post on Tuesday (March 17, 2026), Surendra Kushwaha said, “The Grand Alliance had a chance for one seat. Who could have been a better candidate than Deepak Yadav ji, if not Mukesh Sahni ji, but by not giving him a chance, a person from a class whose support base is against the Grand Alliance was made the candidate.”

He further wrote, “I cannot support NDA and RJD chose the wrong candidate so I thought it better not to vote. As for blaming me, we had won the Assembly elections by defeating the entire government machinery on the most favorite seat of the Chief Minister and I am repaying the debt of public blessings by carrying out development works at the fastest pace in the whole of Bihar, then when the opponent is not able to match, he will defame me. I hope the public will appreciate my sacrifice and dedication for the Dalit, backward and minority class. Will understand the sentiment and will not fall into the trap of opponents.”

Let us tell you that Deepak Yadav had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Valmiki Nagar from RJD and the 2025 Assembly elections also from RJD from Valmiki Nagar. Lost both elections. He is the son-in-law of UP’s strongman DP Yadav.

Factors of Tejashwi Yadav’s defeat: Neeraj Kumar

The JDU leader further said, “AAP did not allow AIMIM, a constituent of the Grand Alliance, to be its candidate and made the person with money power the candidate… Who paid the hotel bill?… As you were raising the issue of gas shortage, were the MLAs fed food cooked on a wooden stove in the hotel? Please give information about all these things…” Neeraj Kumar clearly said that Congress has said in the past too that Tejashwi Yadav is the factor of defeat.

On the other hand, on the statement of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, JDU National Executive President Sanjay Jha said, “…which MLAs came or did not come, that party should see. All our MLAs were independent…”

NDA candidates have won five Rajya Sabha seats of Bihar. After the voting held on Monday (March 16, 2026), the results were announced late in the evening. Meanwhile, the grand alliance has suffered a severe blow. RJD had made AD Singh its candidate.

After the counting was completed, Tejashwi Yadav said that RJD candidate has got 37 votes. Whereas BJP’s Shivesh Ram has got 30 votes. We want the counting process to be fair. Tejashwi Yadav said that the counting process is video recorded, the ruling party has done the recounting which means that BJP has lost the election. RJD has got 37 votes and NDA has got 30 votes. This clearly means that we have won the elections.

A total of six candidates were in the fray for five seats.

Let us tell you that there were a total of six candidates in the fray for five seats in Bihar. Nitish Kumar, Ramnath Thakur from JDU, Nitin Naveen, Shivesh Ram from BJP and Upendra Kushwaha from RLM had filed their nominations. AD Singh was fielded from RJD.

Union Minister Chirag Paswan reached Patna from Delhi on Monday (March 16, 2026). During this, he claimed that all the NDA candidates will win on the five Rajya Sabha seats of Bihar. He said that the way the opposition gradually divided during the voting, voting against each other, all this shows that NDA’s victory is certain. He was talking to journalists at Patna airport.
