Match: New South Wales vs South Australia, 2014

Young Australian batsman Phillip Hughes was considered to be the next superstar of cricket, but a bouncer took away his life. While batting, fast bowler Shaun Abbott’s ball hit him below his neck, causing serious brain injury. He died in hospital two days later.

After this accident, helmet designs were changed in international cricket, so that neck protection could be ensured. His score of “63 not out” is still remembered as a tribute.

Raman Lamba – India

Match: Dhaka Premier League, 1998

Former India batsman Raman Lamba was playing in the domestic league in Bangladesh when he fielded without a helmet at short leg. The ball hit batsman Mehrab Hussain’s shot directly on his head. At first Lamba came out walking, but after a few hours he went into coma and died three days later. After this incident, helmets were made mandatory for close-in fielders across the world.

Wilf Slack – England

Match: Home match, Gambia, 1989

England batsman Wilf Slack suddenly collapsed while batting. Doctors later told that he had blackouts several times before, but no disease was detected. His death created new rules regarding the health monitoring system of players.

Wasim Raja – Pakistan

Former Pakistan all-rounder Wasim Raja was playing a veterans match in England when he suffered a heart attack on the field itself. He died within a few minutes. After this incident, cardiac checkup and fitness test started being taken seriously for senior players.

Darryn Randle – South Africa

Randle tried to play a pull shot on a bouncer, but the ball hit his head. Despite wearing a helmet he could not escape. After this incident, the Cricket Board laid more emphasis on helmet safety technology.

Zulfikar Bhatti – Pakistan

Pakistan’s young batsman Zulfikar Bhatti was hit on the chest by a fast ball. After a few seconds he fell on the ground and died of heart failure. Since then, the need for chest guards for batsmen was emphasized.

Ion Foley – England

Match: English domestic cricket, 1993

England spinner Ian Foley was injured by the ball while batting. Foley was hit on the head while batting. During the operation in the hospital, he suffered a heart attack and died. This incident emphasized the need for emergency medical facilities in stadiums.

But when he was playing a club match in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, he was hit on the head by a ball at silly-point. Raman Lamba was not even wearing a helmet at that time. Due to this accident, he went into coma for three years and finally Raman Lamba’s life left him.

Wasim Raja

Pakistan’s left-handed batsman Wasim Raja died on the cricket field while playing a 50-over match for a British team, Surrey, in August 2006. During this time he suffered a heart attack and died. Wasim Raja played 57 Test and 54 ODI matches for Pakistan. Wasim Raja was the brother of former Pakistani cricket team player and commentator Rameez Raja.

Phillip Hughes

25 year old Australian player Phillip Hughes also died due to a terrible accident on the cricket ground. In November 2014, during a Sheffield Shield match, fast bowler Sean Abbott’s ball hit Phillip Hughes on the neck. As soon as the ball hit, Philip immediately fell on the ground. After this accident, he was immediately taken to the hospital, where it was found that his head was fractured and there was bleeding in the brain. But Philip could fight this accident only for two days and later he died.

Richard Beaumont

English club cricketer Richard Beaumont’s happy day became the day that took his life. On 5 August 2012, Richard Beaumont took five wickets against Astwood Bank Cricket Club. But as soon as this happened, he suffered a major stroke, due to which he fell on the ground. Richard Beaumont was quickly taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, but doctors declared him dead.

Darryn Randall

East London wicketkeeper batsman Darryn Randall also died like 25 year old Australian player Phillip Hughes. On 27 October 2013, Darryn Randall was attempting a pull shot during a Border League match in the Eastern Cape, but the ball missed and hit him on the head. Darrin Randall died from head injuries.
