A strange dismissal during the Meghalaya vs Manipur match in Ranji Trophy has become a topic of discussion. Manipur player Lambam Ajay Singh was given out for hitting the ball twice. The report quoted a match official as saying, ‘He could have put it away with the pads, but he stopped it with the bat. Umpire Dharmesh Bhardwaj gave him out for hitting the ball twice. As soon as the Meghalaya team appealed, the batsman returned from the field to the pavilion.

What is ICC’s rule?

According to section 34.1.1 of the MCC Laws, if the ball is in play and the ball hits the bat, body or any part of the striker and the striker intentionally hits the ball a second time with the bat or any part of the body (except the hand not holding the bat), then the batsman is out. (before any fielder touches the ball) except when the second strike is made only to save one’s wicket.

This is not the first time that a batsman has been out like this in Ranji Trophy, it had happened in 2005-06 also. Jammu and Kashmir captain Dhruv Mahajan was also given out in a similar manner against Jharkhand. Even before that, such dismissals were seen thrice in Ranji Trophy. Anand George of Tamil Nadu was out in 1998-99, Shahid Parvez of Jammu and Kashmir in 1986-87 and KK Bavanna of Andhra in 1963-64 were out like this.

Mohammed Shami was not included in the Australia tour, before this he was not even a part of the Test series against England and West Indies. Many questions were raised on this. Shami himself, while talking to the media a few days ago, had said that if he is not fit then he should not play for Bengal. He had said that if I can play 4-day cricket then I can also play 50 overs cricket. Now Shami has given the answer not through words but through his bowling.
