How Much Salt is Safe per Day: The most important thing to maintain heart health...

How Much Salt is Safe per Day: The most important thing to maintain heart health and keep blood pressure under control is limited intake of salt. Scientists and health experts around the world are unanimous that reducing sodium intake is very important to prevent diseases like high blood pressure and heart attack. The surprising thing is that the hidden sodium present in processed foods i.e. packaged food causes more harm than the amount of salt that is harmful to us. Let us tell you about it in detail.

Why does increased salt become a danger?

Salt, scientifically known as sodium chloride, directly affects blood pressure. The reason for this is that sodium controls the amount of water in the body. When we eat too much salt, water gets retained in the body, due to which the blood volume increases and blood pressure also goes up. Over time, this condition starts weakening the walls of the arteries and increases the risk of heart diseases.

How much salt is safe to eat?

According to the World Health Organization and the American Heart Association, if you have high blood pressure, you should consume less than 1500 mg of sodium per day (about three-fourths of a teaspoon of salt). Up to 2300 mg of sodium, about one teaspoon of salt, is considered safe for a healthy person. Reports have found that reducing sodium intake by just 1000 mg can reduce systolic blood pressure by 3 to 5 mmHg. That means a little meditation can increase the lifespan of your heart.

Where is salt hidden?

Most people think that salt comes only by adding it to food, whereas the truth is different from this. The real danger comes from hidden salt in packaged foods. This includes ready-to-eat meals, fast food, bakery products and sausages, soups, chips, noodles, bread, cheese and sauces. According to the FDA, the largest portion of our daily sodium intake comes from these processed foods, not table salt.

Too little salt is also harmful

Although reducing sodium is important, consuming too little less than 1500 mg can be dangerous, especially for people who have heart or kidney problems. Sodium is essential for nerve and muscle functioning of the body, hence moderation is very important while reducing its quantity.
