Jahaz Mahal was built by the Lodi dynasty during 1452 to 1526. According to historians, it was built as an inn. So that the guests coming from far away can get a place to stay. There is a big story behind naming this palace Jahaz Mahal. Actually this palace was built on the banks of Hauz-e-Shamsi lake. It is said that when the shadow of this building fell on the lake, it looked as if a ship was floating in water. For this reason this building came to be called Jahaz Mahal.

With time the Hauz-e-Shamsi lake almost dried up. But Jahaz Mahal still stands with its beauty. However, its walls and stairs are dilapidated. Yet the sandstone pillars, colorful tiles and beautiful umbrellas keep its historical beauty alive.

A flower fair is organized every year in the month of October in Jahaz Mahal. This tradition is years old. The British had stopped it in 1942 but Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru restarted it in 1961. Even today, flower sellers and tourists from all over the country come to this fair in large numbers.

Jahaz Mahal is located near Hauz-e-Shamsi Lake in Mehrauli area of ​​Delhi. Metro is the easiest option to reach here. This palace is about one kilometer away from Chhatarpur station of Yellow Line Metro. Free entry is available here from 6 am to 7 pm.
