Ranjeet told that the shooting of the film started and the entire first schedule of the film was in the evening shift. Ranjeet remembers that on one such day of shooting, Rekha came to him and requested him to shift from evening to morning. The reason for this was that she wanted to keep her evening free and spend it with Amitabh Bachchan. Ranjeet explained to him that changing the schedule would mess up the entire logistics and other actors would also be affected, so he politely refused. Rekha respected his decision but giving priority to her time with Amitabh Bachchan, she decided to leave the film and returned the signing amount to Ranjeet. There was not much talk about it at that time but today it is a well-known and often repeated story in Bollywood.

Director Vijay Anand’s film ‘Ram Balram’, released in the 1980s, is counted among the most popular and successful films of Hindi cinema. In this film, the pair of superstar Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan were seen together on the big screen for the first time. Due to the strong story, great songs and star cast, the film achieved tremendous success at the box office and was well-liked among the audience.

There was controversy regarding starcast
As much as the film became famous for its story, its casting controversy also made headlines. According to the report of IMDb, there was a lot of buzz behind the scenes regarding the female lead in the film. It is said that Amitabh Bachchan wanted him to be paired with Rekha in the film. Amitabh had also put pressure on the producer to romance Rekha on screen. The then famous actress Zeenat Aman was angry with this decision. Zeenat wanted that she should get a strong and equal role in the film and not just a supporting character.

Dev Anand became Zeenat Aman’s support
To express her displeasure, Zeenat Aman spoke to her close friend Dev Anand. Dev Anand took Zeenat’s message to his brother and film director Vijay Anand. Zeenat and Dev Anand’s friendship was from the time of the 1971 film ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’, due to which their views were taken seriously. The result was that Zeenat Aman got a place as the lead actress in the film.

The pairing of Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan added a touch of romance to the film, while the chemistry of Zeenat Aman and Dharmendra was also appreciated by the audience. Both pairs proved to be hits. According to the report of Sacnilk, the film Ram Balram was made at a cost of around Rs 2 crores. The film had earned Rs 9.5 crore at the box office. This was one of the top films of the year 1980. With this it became the third highest grossing film.

Big B wrote on his blog, “…another valiant legend has left us…gone from the arena…leaving behind him a silence with an unbearable sound…Dharam ji…simplicity. He brought with him the fragrance of the soil of the Punjab village from where he came, and remained true to its nature…remained spotless throughout his illustrious career, in a fraternity that saw changes every decade…changes in the fraternity…not in him.”

Shahrukh Khan paid emotional tribute to Dharmendra
Shahrukh Khan also came to bid farewell to Dharmendra. King Khan had a deep relationship with the veteran actor. Late on Monday night, the actor shared an old picture with the late actor on his Twitter handle and wrote a very personal and emotional message, Shah Rukh wrote, “May your soul rest in peace, Dharam ji.” He further wrote, “You were like a father to me… Thank you for the way you blessed and loved me. An irreparable loss not only to your family, but to cinema and film lovers around the world. Forever. Love you always.”
