Secularism In Countries: Secularism is a principle that allows a person to consider his religion a private matter and also ensures that religion does not interfere in the political, cultural and economic aspects of society. Over the past several decades, many countries have adopted secular policies to promote equality and protect individual freedoms. Today we will know about a country which is the most secular country in the world and also where India stands in this matter.

Which country is the most secular country in the world?

Sweden is considered the most secular country in the world. Although most Swedes are formal members of the Lutheran Church, the religion in this country still functions more as a cultural heritage than as a core identity. Be it education, politics or policy making, public life remains largely secular.

Along with this, Denmark also has very deep Lutheran roots. But despite this, Danish people participate in religious rituals more out of tradition than belief. Special emphasis is given to secularism through education, law and social life. Because of which Denmark has become one of the most secular countries in the world.

Iceland is also a secular country

Along with this, Iceland is also a strong secular country despite being small in population. The state’s church is Lutheran, but religious beliefs play little role in everyday life. Participate in church functions out of Sanskrit rituals rather than for spiritual reasons.

What is the situation in India?

Despite being constitutionally secular, India ranks very low among the most secular countries in the world with a score of 77.8. India’s situation is in sharp contrast to countries that maintain strict separation between state and religion. India maintains religious freedom among its diverse population.

Countries like Sweden, Denmark and Iceland show how secularism can happen even in a country with a religious heritage. Education, economic development and progressive political policies have inspired these countries towards secularism. India’s journey towards secularism is also continuing. The constitution here also guarantees secular governance, but due to cultural traditions, striking a balance proves to be a big challenge.

Dalai lama india china relationship: For the first time after Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s much awaited China visit, which is happening for the first time after the Galwan clash (2020). China has reacted strongly to the successor of the Dalai Lama. China has termed this issue as a ‘fork’ in India-China relations. Earlier on Saturday, the Dalai Lama reached Leh Airport under very tight security.

China’s strict warning- ‘The issue related to Shijang for India’
The Chinese Embassy in Beijing issued a statement on Sunday saying that India should seriously understand the sensitivity associated with ‘Shijang’ (XIzang, Tibet). China said that the theme of Dalai Lama’s successor and rebirth is ‘completely internal matter’, in which there is no place for any external intervention. Chinese embassy spokesperson U Jing wrote on the social media platform x, ‘The issue related to Shijang is like a thorn in India-China relations and it is becoming a burden for India. Playing ‘Shijang Card’ will be a suicide step for India.

China objected to the comments of Indian experts
U Jing said that in recent times, Indian strategic affairs experts, former officials and academics have given ‘unfair statements’ about the successor of the Dalai Lama, which according to China does not match the public policy of the Government of India. He also claimed that the Tibetan people in Tibet have maintained their traditional culture, dress, catering and architecture with independence. He also shared some pictures.

What was said by India?
The Government of India has repeated a neutral attitude on this matter. Foreign Ministry (Mea) spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told the media on 4 July- ‘The Government of India does not take any official stance in matters related to religious beliefs and traditions nor comments. India has always supported religious freedom for all.

China provoked from Union Minister’s statement
One reason for China’s response is the statement of Union Minister Kiran Rijiju in which he attended the Dalai Lama’s birthday celebrations and said that as a Buddhist follower, he believes that the Dalai Lama and his office are entitled to decide on the successor.
China raised strong objections to this and called it an ‘anti -China separatist attitude’.

Dalai Lama’s statement and Chinese Anger
During his 90th birthday ceremony this month, the Dalai Lama clearly stated that his successor will be selected completely through the religious process and China should not have any role in it. This statement was further enraged by China. China wants the successor to get approval from its government.

Exile in India and the presence of Dalai Lama
The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since 1959, when he revolted against China’s rule in Tibet. Indian strategic experts believe that the presence of the Dalai Lama is a diplomatic benefit for India. At present, there are about 70,000 Tibetan refugees and Tibetan exile governments in India, which operate from Dharamshala.

Dalai lama reincarnation: The controversy over the rebirth of the successor of the 14th Dalai Lama has now become not only spiritual, but has become strategic. This challenge for India is also big because the Dalai Lama and the hosts of the exiled Tibetan government live here. China can create tremendous pressure on India on this issue so that no rebirth is on the land of India. According to intelligence sources, this matter has now become more political dominance than religious rights.

Dalai Lama’s rebirth and China’s objection
The 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso announced on his 90th birthday that the process of appointing his successor would be through the Gaden Fodrang Trust. He clarified that there will be no intervention of any external institution or government in this process. China dismissed this statement, saying that the rebirth process should be according to the ‘Golden Arn’ tradition of the 18th century Ching dynasty and the approval of the Chinese government.

Right to recognition of rebirth to Gaden Fodarrang Trust
The Dalai Lama said in his statement that the Dalai Lama’s organization will remain and the Gaden Fodrang Trust, which is a non-profit organization and was established in 2015, will have the right to recognize his future rebirth. He reiterated that “no other intervention in this subject.” This statement directly challenges the strategy of China in which it is trying to stop a legitimate successor in India from emerging.

China’s strategy and global impact
According to sources, China has been preparing for the appointment of a state -backed 15th Dalai Lama for the last decade to reduce the religious resistance of the Tibetan community. But with this announcement of the Dalai Lama, the validity of any Chinese -appointed heir ends in the eyes of Tibetan and the global Buddhist community. If there is rebirth in India, then two parallel Dalai Lama will exist – one in legitimate exile and the other in Lhasa, representative of China.

New twist in India-China relations
This whole matter can deepen the stressful border and political relations between India and China. Sources say that Tibetan and global Buddhist society will not accept any religious leaders imposed by China. This will affect China’s religious diplomacy, especially in areas like Mongolia, Ladakh, Sikkim and Bhutan.

China’s internal response and potential strategy
According to News18, intelligence sources said that China can intensify arrests, surveillance and ideological repression in Tibet to face this challenge.
He can also target Buddhist monasteries and educational institutions. Meanwhile, China may announce a rival Dalai Lama in a hurry to prevent the increasing global acceptance of a possible successor in India.
