Us-mexico 1944 water sharing treatment: The 1944 water treaty between the US and Mexico is an important diplomatic agreement, under which the two countries supply water to each other from Rio Grande and Colorado River. Recently US President Donald Trump accused Mexico of violation of the treaty. He said that Mexico is stealing water from the farmers of Texas. He made this allegation on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’, which deepened the controversy.

According to the 1944 Water Treaty, Mexico has to give 1.75 million acres of water to America from Rio Grande every 5 years. The US has to give 1.5 million acres of water annually to Mexico from the Colorado River. This supply is done through a network of dams and reservoirs. According to the Reuters report, by 2020-2025, Mexico has sent only 30 percent water to the US so far. Let us know that this cycle is ending in October.

Texas’s only sugar mill closed
Donald Trump accused Mexico that the only sugar mill in Texas was closed last year as Mexico did not provide water. He criticized former US President Joe Biden, saying that his administration did not help the farmers, while leaders like Ted Kruz are fighting for the farmers of Texas. However, refuting Trump’s allegations, Mexican President Claudia Shinbam said that it has been drought for the last three years and as far as water is available, the Mexico is following the Treaty.

America and Mexico vulnerable to severe drought
Mexican President Claudia Shinbam said that a detailed proposal has been sent to the US, which includes immediate measures. Mexican officials are in touch with the US foreign and agriculture departments regarding this. Both America and Mexico are currently vulnerable to heavy droughts. In recent years, the water level in the Colorado River has fallen significantly.
