An important warning coming from the capital Delhi has increased the concern of parents. Experts of AIIMS, the country’s top medical institute, have clearly said that excessive screen time of children can have a serious impact on their development. If precautions are not taken in time, it can have far reaching consequences.

Distance from screens is necessary in the first months of birth

Professor Shafali Gulati, Faculty Incharge of Pediatric Neurology Division, says that children from birth till 18 months should be kept completely away from mobile, TV or any kind of screen. At this age, children’s brains develop rapidly and screens can hinder their natural development.

Direct impact on language and behavior

According to experts, the ability to learn language may be affected in children who watch too much screen. Along with this, their social behavior may also become weak. Sometimes such symptoms appear which appear like autism, although it is not directly considered to be the cause of autism.

It is important to limit screen time for small children

Doctors have advised that the screen time of children between 18 months to 6 years should be extremely limited. At this age, it is important to involve children more in sports, conversation and creative activities so that their mental and social development can improve.

Emphasis on increasing awareness about autism

The month of April is celebrated as Autism Awareness Month across the world. The United Nations has set the theme for the year 2026 as “Autism & Humanity: Every Life has Value”. Under this, a special public health lecture is being organized at AIIMS, New Delhi on 30th April, in which the complications related to autism spectrum disorder will be discussed in detail.

Early detection can lead to better outcomes

Experts say that symptoms of autism can be identified only at the age of 12 to 18 months. In such a situation, early identification and timely treatment is very important. According to statistics, one in every 31 people is found to be affected by autism, which makes it a major public health challenge.

Other health risks associated with autism are also a cause for concern

According to AIIMS data, about 80 percent of children suffering from autism are also found to have other problems. These include epilepsy, lack of attention, behavioral problems and sleep problems. Due to these problems the quality of life of children and their families is deeply affected.

Doctors believe that the role of family is very important in the treatment of autism. With the right information, timely intervention and individual care, children’s development can be significantly improved. Besides, it has also been advised to avoid alternative medical methods without scientific basis.

The aim of this initiative is not only to cure the disease but also to increase awareness in the society and to give a dignified life to the people affected with autism. Continuous efforts are being made by AIIMS through helpline, digital platform and educational material so that every child gets better opportunities and no one is discriminated against in the society.
