Road Deaths In India: A lot of road accidents may be seen in India in 2024. The number of deaths in road accidents has reached the highest ever number of 1.77 lakh. 2024 was the most dangerous year in the country’s traffic history. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has given these shocking figures in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. These show that despite awareness campaigns, changing traffic fines and infrastructure upgrades, the current road safety crisis in India remains bad. The death toll in 2023 was 1.73 lakh.

Rapid increase in deaths across the country

The Road Transport Minister said that 1,77,177 people died in road accidents in 2024. This data includes accident information received from states and union territories and information received from West Bengal through the EDAR portal. With this, 54,433 deaths occurred on the National Highway alone. This is approximately 31% of all road accident deaths in the country.

Uttar Pradesh tops

Among all the states, Uttar Pradesh has seen the highest number of deaths in both 2023 and 2024. 23,652 deaths were recorded here in 2023. With this, this figure increased to 24,118 in 2024. If we talk about Tamil Nadu, there were 18,347 deaths in 2023. In 2024 this figure will reach 18,449. The death toll in Maharashtra increased from 15,366 to 15,715.

Signs of crisis in Madhya Pradesh

The fastest increase was seen in Madhya Pradesh. There were 13,798 deaths here in 2023 and this figure increased to 14,791 in 2024. A slight increase was also seen in Karnataka and Rajasthan. The death toll in Karnataka increased from 12,321 to 12,390 and in Rajasthan from 11,762 to 11,790. With this the number in Bihar increased from 8,873 to 9347. In Andhra Pradesh also this number increased from 8,137 to 8,346.

The data of 2024 shows that despite progress in infrastructure, there is no decline in road accidents. According to reports, over speeding, drunk driving, distracted driving, poor maintenance of the vehicle and not responding properly in emergency are the main reasons for this. There is a lot of emphasis being placed on the need for stricter policing, greater use of intelligent traffic systems, better driver training and more public awareness.

Top five states die in most road accidents

Uttar Pradesh has died in the highest number of road accidents in 2023. There have been 23,652 deaths here. After this, Tamil Nadu comes in second place. There have been 18,347 deaths here. After this, Maharashtra comes in third place and 15,366 deaths have occurred here. In fourth place, Madhya Pradesh comes to Madhya Pradesh with 13,798 deaths and in fifth place with 12,321 deaths to Karnataka. Let us tell you that the biggest increase has been seen in the death of those driving two wheelers. About 70% of these people did not wear helmets.

The main cause of road accident

In the report of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the main reason for the accident has been given to speed up and drive in the wrong direction. Along with this, ignoring security rules is also playing a very important role in death in road habits. The Indian government has set a target to work up to 50% of the road accident by 2030. But to get this, the general public will have to strictly follow the traffic law. Along with this, the government is also going to start a national road safety mission to monitor public awareness and accidents.
