The Yunus government of Bangladesh is so afraid of Sheikh Hasina’s influence that the entire Dhaka city has been converted into a cantonment. Police conducted a large-scale coordinated security exercise in the capital Dhaka on Saturday (November 8). Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) sources said that around 7,000 policemen took part in the exercise at 142 important places in the city. These included the residence of Muhammad Yunus, head of the interim government, so that potentially violent street demonstrations could be controlled next week.

Eyewitnesses said that police presence has increased in Dhaka, causing increased concern among residents about the law and order situation on 13 November. The International Criminal Tribunal of Bangladesh is soon going to announce the date of verdict for alleged humanity crimes against Sheikh Hasina. Dhaka Police described the deployment as part of its regular security exercise.

A large number of policemen were seen deployed with anti-riot equipment, such as steel helmets and body armor, at major intersections in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. They were checking bags of pedestrians and inspecting suspicious vehicles.

What did Dhaka Police spokesperson tell?
Dhaka Police spokesperson Muhammad Talebur Rahman told reporters that our regular operational activities include quick response exercises to be prepared for any emergency. An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Saturday’s mega drill was not only to check the coordination and preparedness of the police but also as a deterrent to prevent any possible violence or unrest in the capital before November 13.

This exercise took place at a time when just three days ago the Army had recalled half of its approximately 60,000 soldiers deployed on policing duty for the last 15 months. Bangladesh’s military said troops needed rest and training, but promised full support with the deployment of additional forces for elections scheduled in February.
