A relief and historic news has come out from the health and medical sector of Himachal Pradesh. Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla, the largest government hospital of the state, has made a record in the field of modern medicine. For the first time, a very complex but completely successful ‘Robotic Surgery’ for colon cancer has been performed in IGMC.

Treatment worth Rs 5 lakh done for just Rs 30 thousand

On hearing the name of a serious disease like cancer, the patient and his family members get physically and mentally broken, but the biggest fear is the financial burden. The robotic surgery for large intestine cancer for which a huge bill of at least Rs 5 lakh is made in renowned private hospitals of big cities, was done at IGMC Shimla at a nominal cost. With the help of government hospital facilities and schemes like Ayushman/Himcare, this complex operation was done in IGMC for about Rs 30 thousand.

The patient started eating and drinking on the fourth day itself.

HOD of the surgery department of IGMC, Dr. Puneet Mahajan and cancer surgeon Dr. Yashpal told that when the team of expert doctors did the initial examination of the patient, cancer was found in the large intestine. After this, it was decided to use state-of-the-art robotic technology instead of traditional incisional operation. During the surgery, with the help of robotic arms, only that part of the large intestine which was affected by cancer was cut and removed with great precision.

What is robotic surgery and its benefits?

In traditional surgery, the doctor has to make a big cut on the patient’s body, but robotic surgery is completely different and advanced. In this, very big incisions are not made on the body. Cameras and robotic equipment are inserted into the body through small holes. Due to this, the patient experiences much less pain after surgery. The accuracy of the machine is so high that the surrounding veins are not damaged, due to which bleeding is extremely less and the need for blood transfusion is less. Due to the absence of major wounds, the patient recovers very quickly and starts walking on his feet. The surgeon sits at a 3D console (screen) and gives commands to the robot, through which the cancerous part can be removed with 100 percent accuracy.

The country’s most prestigious government hospital, AIIMS Delhi, has created a new history in the matter of treatment of patients. Statistics of the last one year show that the number of people coming here for treatment has broken all records till now. Not only the number of patients, but also a significant increase in beds and admissions has been recorded, which tells the story of expansion of health services.

More than 48 lakh patients treated in OPD, figures create new record

According to the latest data of AIIMS Delhi, 48,43,572 patients availed OPD services during the year 2024-25. This number in itself is considered a big achievement. This achievement is also important for the hospital administration because handling patients on such a large scale is a big challenge for any institution.

Increase in IPD also, 3.61 lakh patients admitted

Not only OPD, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of patients admitted and treated. In the year 2024-25, 3,61,236 patients were admitted to the hospital and given treatment. This shows that even in serious cases, people’s trust in AIIMS is continuously increasing.

332 new beds added in two years, structure expanded

If we look at the reports of the last three years, the infrastructure of the hospital has continuously improved. By the year 2024-25, the total number of beds has increased to 3,657. Within two years, 332 new beds were added, which is considered an important step in view of the increasing patient number.

OPD load increased by 13.81 percent in two years

If the year 2022-23 is compared with 2024-25, then 5,87,771 additional patients were treated in OPD. This shows an increase of about 13.81 percent. This level of increase in such a short period of time reflects both the increasing demand for health services and the capacity of the institution.

Nearly 29 percent jump in admitted patients

There has been an even sharper increase in the number of patients admitted and treated. While 2,80,770 patients were admitted to IPD in the year 2022-23, this figure increased to 3,61,236 in 2024-25. That means an increase of 80,466 patients in two years, which is an increase of about 28.65 percent. This increase is believed to be around one third.
