The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is going to complete 100 years of RSS. The RSS has targeted to communicate more and more in its centenary year. Today RSS is counted among the largest voluntary organizations in the world. Its activities are spread to village and city and city, but its foundation was laid in Nagpur about a century ago. The headquarters of the Sangh are still in the Hedgewar Bhawan at Jhande Chowk in Nagpur, but where and when its first branch started, let’s know it.

When did the establishment of RERSS?

The RSS was founded by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar on 27 September 1925 in Nagpur on the day of Vijayadashami. Hedgewar believed that for the independence of the country and the upliftment of society, discipline, patriotism and a sense of organization are necessary. He started the Sangh to embodiment this thinking.

Where was the first branch?

The first branch of the Sangh was at Mohitwara ground in Nagpur. Only 15 to 20 people attended this branch. The nature of the branch was very simple, in this, volunteers would come at the scheduled time, do physical exercises, follow discipline and share patriotic songs and ideas. This branch had become the most important and permanent functioning of the association.

Why is the branch important?

The branch is called the soul of the RSS, not just a meeting. This is the infrastructure of the organization, where volunteers are found on daily or weekly basis and take physical-mental training. Hedgewar believed that a large organization could be set up through small branches. This model has connected the Sangh with crores of workers today.

Why was Nagpur chosen?

The reason behind considering Nagpur as the birthplace of the Sangh was that Dr. Hedgewar lived here and this city was the center of socio-political activities at that time. From here, the foundation of expansion of branches was laid all over India. Even today, the headquarters of the Sangh are in Nagpur and the celebration of Vijayadashami is broadcast from here as a message.

How is today’s situation

This journey started from just one branch in 1925, today it has reached thousands of branches. According to the union, more than 60,000 branches are installed in India every day. Apart from this, branches are also operated in America, Britain, Australia and many countries.
