There is a continuous decline in the Indian rupee and its effect is visible on...

There is a continuous decline in the Indian rupee and its effect is visible on every sector. But amidst this decline, an interesting thing has come to light which is no less than a hidden bonus for Indians working in America and those earning in dollars. Even though there has not been a single dollar increment in his salary, its price in India has become higher than before. Many people think that the weakness of rupee means only loss, but for those getting salary in dollars, this weakness makes their earnings stronger.

What actually happens is that when the value of rupee falls against the dollar, for exchanging one dollar one gets more rupees than before. Suppose earlier the price of one dollar was 80 rupees and now it has increased to 90 rupees, then at such a time the salary of Indians living and working in America in dollars remains the same, but if the same money is sent to India or converted into Indian rupees, then the amount becomes much higher. Due to this, his family sitting in India also gets a big benefit and their income increases in rupees without any salary hike.

If the salary of an Indian is $ 5,000 per month, then when the dollar was equal to Rs 80, then the cost of his salary in India was Rs 4 lakh. But if the dollar has reached Rs 90, then the same salary now becomes Rs 4 lakh 50 thousand. That is, without the increase of even a single dollar, there was a profit of Rs 50 thousand just by changing the exchange rate. This is why many NRI families consider the rupee’s depreciation as a kind of economic bonus, because the amount coming to their house becomes more than before.

How much amount are you getting?

Many people manage their family expenses, school fees, healthcare, EMIs and investments with this money. An NRI sends $1,000 to his family every month, so when the dollar was Rs 80, the family received Rs 80,000. But now if the dollar becomes worth Rs 90, then the same amount will increase to Rs 90,000. That means the family gets an additional amount of Rs 10,000, that too without any extra effort or work.

they also benefit

This benefit is not only available to Indians working in America, but also to millions of freelancers and remote workers who work for American companies or clients in India. Today in India, a large number of people are getting paid in dollars in many fields like IT, design, content writing, digital marketing, app development. The weakening of the rupee directly becomes an opportunity for all of them to earn more. If a freelancer got $200 for a project, earlier it was equivalent to Rs 16,000. But now the same project can give him up to Rs 18,000.

Rupee vs Dollar: Indian currency rupee is at its lowest level these days. On Wednesday,...

Rupee vs Dollar: Indian currency rupee is at its lowest level these days. On Wednesday, the rupee broke the 90 level and reached an all-time low. The biggest reason for this decline in rupee against dollar is the higher demand for dollar against rupee in the market.

Apart from this, continuous selling by foreign investors, geopolitical uncertainty, stalled talks on trade deal can also be held responsible for the fall in the rupee. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has now given a statement regarding this fall in the rupee. She believes that the Indian currency will find its way amid India’s strong growth outlook.

Rupee must find its own way

Speaking at the 23rd edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS), the Finance Minister said, “The rupee will have to find its own path.” The Finance Minister stressed that the debate on currency levels should include current economic realities and not compare them with past situations.

The Finance Minister said, “Look at the fundamentals of the economy, look at the growth. The debate on currency should be decided according to the current reality and not by direct comparison with past situations.”

Assess the strength of the economy: Finance Minister

The Finance Minister further said, “As far as the rupee-dollar exchange rate is concerned, when the value of the currency depreciates, the natural logic is that exporters should take advantage of it. Incidentally, some people say that at the time of US tariffs, it has provided some relief. Even if that is true, I am not entirely satisfied with that explanation – but it is true that the strength of the economy must also be assessed along with it.”

Let us tell you that on December 4, the Indian Rupee fell to its lowest level of 90.46 against the US Dollar, the main reason for which is the delay in the India-US trade deal and the continuous withdrawal of foreign capital from the Indian stock market. The special thing is that when retail inflation is at a record low and GDP growth is above 8 percent, then the weakening of the domestic currency against the dollar is surprising.

What will be the growth of the economy?

In the second quarter, GDP growth reached the highest level in six quarters at 8.2 percent. On the other hand, India’s retail inflation fell to a record low of 0.25 percent in October. The Finance Minister believes that the growth of the Indian economy will continue in the coming times and the overall growth this year (FY26) may be 7 percent or even more.

Indian Economy: India’s economy is continuously progressing. For the last two consecutive quarters, GDP growth has outpaced the projections made for it, corporate companies are also earning handsomely and recently revealed data has also revealed that the country’s GDP grew at the rate of 8.2 percent in the second quarter of the financial year 2025-26, which is much more than 5.6 percent in the same quarter last year.

Global agencies also recognized India’s strength

Even the global agencies which had doubts about the pace of Indian economy have now accepted India’s strength. All this is happening, but the surprising thing is that still the rupee is falling. On Wednesday, the Indian rupee fell to a record low against the US dollar. For the first time one dollar has crossed 90 rupees. These two things are completely opposite to each other because GDP shows what is going on inside the country and currency shows what is India’s status in the outside world.

Relationship between growth and economy

Manoranjan Sharma, Chief Economist of Informix Ratings, says that the connection between growth and currency is beyond people’s understanding. He said that a strong economy helps the rupee, but this factor alone is not enough. Explaining this, he said, due to global capital flow, interest rate difference and geopolitical uncertainty, the rupee is falling and the demand for safe haven currency dollar is increasing. Dollar is called safe haven currency because it maintains stability in times of uncertainty in the global market.

He also said that India’s dependence on imported energy, electronics and gold, as well as inflation differentials with trading partners and a widening current account deficit are also putting pressure on the rupee. In such a situation, this thinking is old that if GDP strengthens, then the rupee will also automatically strengthen. There is no one-size-fits-all relationship between a strong economy and a strong currency. He also said that due to high interest rates in America, the exchange rate of rupee has declined, while imports have strengthened.

A major reason for the weakness of the rupee is the strength of the dollar. Since talks on a trade deal between the US and India are stuck, expectations regarding a Federal Reserve rate cut are constantly changing. Due to this, investors are investing their money back in dollars. And whenever this happens, currencies around the world weaken.

What next regarding rupee?

Will the rupee continue to fall further? Answering this question, Aastha Ahuja, Professor of Economics at Aryabhatta College, said, as long as uncertainty remains, nothing concrete can be said. After all, for how long will the Reserve Bank continue to sell dollars from its reserves to support the rupee? For the rupee to strengthen, it is important to have a trade deal as soon as possible because the trade deficit is also increasing. Because of this, the rupee has become one of the weakest currencies in Asia.

Weak Rupee Disadvantages: On Wednesday, the Indian rupee crossed Rs 90 against the US dollar,...

Weak Rupee Disadvantages: On Wednesday, the Indian rupee crossed Rs 90 against the US dollar, which is its lowest level ever. The rupee falling below the level of 90.13 against the dollar means that now you will have to spend 90 rupees and 13 paise to buy one dollar.

Of course, its effect will be seen in our and your everyday life because it will make imports expensive, which will increase the prices of many things. Apart from this, this shock can also cause turmoil in the stock market, you will have to spend more on studies abroad etc. Let us see who will gain and lose from this huge fall in the rupee:-

What will become expensive?

As already mentioned, imports become expensive due to falling rupee. This is because dollars are used for transactions in international trade. This means that things imported from other countries have to be paid for in dollars. In such a situation, when the value of rupee falls, we will have to pay more for one dollar than before. When things are purchased at a higher price, they will also be sold at a higher price in the market, which will affect your pocket.

India buys more than 85 percent of its crude oil and more than 60 percent of its edible oil from other countries. Due to weakening of rupee, the government will have to spend more on their imports. In such a situation, they will become more expensive. This will also increase the cost of those industries which are dependent on crude oil and the products made from it. Therefore, cooking oil, LPG and petrol will become expensive, which will cause more problems to low and middle income families.

Even though smartphones, laptops, ACs, fridges are produced on a large scale in India, many parts are used in them which are imported from outside. Due to weak rupee, their prices will also increase, due to which the overall product will become expensive.

Due to the fall in the rupee, education abroad will become expensive because the cost of education will remain the same, but due to the weakening of the rupee, one will have to spend more in buying dollars. Earlier, the annual tuition fee of $50,000 at the rate of Rs 80 per dollar was Rs 40 lakh in Indian currency, but now it has become Rs 45 lakh. That means a direct increase of Rs 5 lakh. This amount is equal to several months’ salary for many middle class families. Due to weakness in rupee, education loan will also become expensive. Now that the rupee has crossed the previous figure (one dollar is equal to Rs 80), students will also have to pay 12-13 percent more EMI.

From electric vehicles to luxury cars, it will also be affected because their production is less at the local level and even if it is produced, many parts will be imported from abroad. If their imports become expensive, the products sold will also become expensive.

The prices of gold and silver are also likely to increase because India buys gold on a large scale from countries like Switzerland, UAE, South Africa, Guinea and Peru. Similarly, India imports silver from countries like China, Hong Kong, Russia and Britain. Due to the expensive rupee, their import will also become expensive, in such a situation gold and silver jewelery will become more expensive.

Why did the rupee fall?

There are many reasons for this decline in rupee. One of these is the uncertainty regarding the trade agreement between America and India. Talks on trade deal between India and America have been stuck for a long time. This has affected the rupee. On top of this, America has also imposed 50 percent tariff on Indian exports, which has badly affected the currency.

Despite strong GDP growth, foreign investors are turning away from Indian markets and are withdrawing their money from here and investing it elsewhere. In the year 2025, foreign investors have so far withdrawn more than 17 billion dollars from the Indian markets, due to which the pressure on the rupee has increased. Changes in RBI policy are also having an impact on this. The International Monetary Fund has reclassified India’s exchange rate system from ‘stabilized’ to ‘crawl-like’. This shows that RBI is now guiding the rupee, not guarding it.

Dollar Vs Rupee: Today, before the MPC meeting of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Indian Rupee has gone into the abyss. On Wednesday, December 3, the rupee crossed the level of 90 against the US dollar, which is its lowest level till date.

In early trade, the rupee opened at 89.96 against the dollar and soon fell to 90.1325. In the last session it had closed at 89.87. This fall in the rupee has come after the currency reached a record low on Tuesday. Currency experts believe that the rupee is weakening due to continuous selling by foreign investors and failure to reach a trade deal between India and America.

Why is the rupee falling?

This year, the rupee has declined by about 5 percent against the dollar and with this it has become the worst performing currency in Asia. There is pressure on the rupee due to record high trade deficit and continuous withdrawal of foreign investors from India. Apart from this, talks regarding trade deal between America and India are also stuck.

Due to all this, the rupee is falling despite the weakening of the dollar index. The increase in imports – especially of gold and silver – along with the decline in exports due to tariffs has widened the merchandise trade gap to $41.68 billion, increasing demand for the dollar. Here, due to increase in demand for dollars, there is pressure on the rupee and it falls.

Will the rupee fall further?

Experts believe that the rupee may remain under pressure for some time to come because the trade deficit is increasing, there is uncertainty regarding the US-India trade agreement, portfolio flow is weak – all this has put the dollar in demand.

RBI has been continuously intervening to reduce the fall in the rupee, but continued outflows and strong dollar strength around the world may push the currency lower over time. Now only RBI’s strategy of intervention and improvement in foreign investment will decide how much further the rupee will weaken from the current level.
