MGNREGA Replacement: Taking a big decision, the BJP government at the Center has decided to abolish the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). Instead of this, the government is now preparing to launch a new employment scheme named Vikas Bharat Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) i.e. VB Ji Ram Ji.

Under this, the government has proposed to increase the days of employment from 100 to 125. Besides, there are plans to make major changes regarding the financial responsibility of this scheme.

The share of funding will change

Under the new law, changes have also been made regarding the funding responsibilities of the central and state governments. While earlier this ratio was 90:10, there are preparations to change it to 60:40. According to information received from media reports, under the new changes, the Central Government will have the right to decide in which parts of the country it wants to run this scheme. Also, the state government will have the right to stop the scheme for 2 months during the harvesting season.

Decision taken under socio-economic changes

The government has given information about the purpose of this bill that, for the last 20 years, MNREGA has provided employment to rural families, but it is necessary to strengthen it amidst the changing socio-economic environment. Those people who are ready to work without skills will get 125 days employment guarantee by the government. The Central Government has taken this step for the overall development of villages under the goal of Developed India by 2047.

Guarantee of employment for 125 days

Under the new laws, adults who are willing to work even without any skills will be given an employment guarantee of 125 days by the government. Earlier, under MNREGA, villagers were getting employment guarantee for up to 100 days.

MNREGA Rename News: An important decision related to rural employment has been taken in the meeting of the Union Cabinet on Friday, 12 December 2025. Now the name of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) has been changed to Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Scheme.

The scheme was started under the name NREGA

This scheme was first started as National Rural Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (NREGA). Later, the then government changed its name to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

After this it started being called MNREGA. Now the central BJP government has decided to make changes in it and call it Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Scheme. Besides, working days have also been extended.

What work is done in MNREGA?

The work provided under MNREGA is mostly labor based. These include construction of roads, activities related to water conservation, digging of ponds, gardening and many small and big works related to community development in villages. Talking about the benefits of this scheme, it has strengthened the economic condition of rural areas.

Besides, due to availability of work in the village, the income of the villagers has also become stable. Due to women getting work under this scheme, their participation has also increased significantly. Now the government’s decision to change the name and increase the working days will directly benefit the rural labourers. Due to increase in wages, their income will also increase.
