Trump Tariff on India: After capturing Venezuela, India and China are now the target of US President Donald Trump. Trump is now preparing to impose heavy tariffs of up to 500 percent on them. To put pressure on countries like India, China and Brazil to stop buying oil from Russia, Trump has approved a new bill named ‘Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025’. This bill has the power to change international trade and all the energy sectors of the world.

Why is this bill special?

US Senator Lindsey Graham says that through this bill the President will be able to take action against those countries which are supporting Russia’s efforts to continue the war in Ukraine by buying cheap oil from it. Through the bill, action will be taken against the countries buying oil from Russia, which will put pressure on those countries and they will stop buying oil from Russia. These countries import not only crude oil but also uranium from Russia.

This announcement, made on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, is being seen as part of the Trump administration’s ‘America First’ trade policy and its efforts to implement a ceasefire in Ukraine. After a press conference with Trump on Wednesday, Senator Graham told a press conference that this bill will give us an opportunity to put tremendous pressure on big economies like China, India and Brazil. Graham also said that by buying cheap oil from Russia, Ukraine is helping Russia in continuing the war. Ukraine is ready to compromise, while Putin is bent on killing innocents.

India’s reaction to Trump’s order

Currently 50 percent American tariff is imposed on India. If Trump imposes tariffs up to 500 percent, it will be nothing less than an economic disaster for many countries including India. This would actually be like imposing a complete trade ban on some of the world’s biggest economies.

India has called this pressure from America unfair and unreasonable because the most important thing for India is to ensure energy security for its population of 1.4 billion people. It is clear from the data of 2025 that India has already reduced buying oil from Russia. Reliance Industries and other government refineries have reduced oil purchases from Russian companies like Rosneft and Lukoil. Meanwhile, India has also increased the purchase of crude oil from America by about 11 percent.

Russian crude oil import: US President Donald Trump has imposed 25 percent penalty on India for import of crude oil from Russia. With this, the tariff on India has increased to 50 percent. The US believes that India and China are the biggest reason for the Russian attack on Ukraine. If it stops buying oil from Russia, then the attack on Ukraine will stop immediately.

Shocking revelation in the report

In the month of September, India bought less oil from Russia than in August. However, this decline is very minor. According to the tracking data of global real time data and analytics provider Capler, India’s oil imports from Russia in September stood at 1.60 million barrels per day, lower than a 5.4 percent level of August. According to Kepler’s report, in September, India’s government companies had crude oil imports from Russia on an average of 605,000 barrels (BPD), which is 32 percent lower at the average of April-August.

Did India really come under Trump’s pressure?

How many oils are to be supplied from Russia to India, it is made six-eight weeks before the contract delivery. That is, how many barrels of barrel oil are to be exported in September, it is decided in the contracts held in July and August. In July, Trump started publicly targeting India for the purchase of oil from Russia and by the first week of August, he also announced to impose penalty on India. What is the reason behind this?

Kepler said that a major reason for this can be the cost of transportation from Russia to India, in which there has been no decrease. The cost of freight from Russia to India from Russia increased by the end of September and early October. The discount on the purchase of oil has also decreased compared to earlier. Apart from this, there may also be a reason for increasing risks of US pressure from Russia and the need to diversify supply for government companies.

Rajnath Singh attacked Trump indirectly, saying that some “bosses” are burning at the fast growth rate of India and are trying to disrupt the country’s economy. He said, “Some people are not happy with the rapid progress of India. They do not like it. ‘Everyone’s boss is we’, so how is India growing so fast?”

America’s 50 percent tariff on India
The US has recently imposed a 25% fee and an additional 25% penalty on Indian goods, as India is continuing to buy oil from Russia. The step was taken after Washington’s allegation that India is funding the war efforts of Russia. Along with this, the US President described India’s economy as “dead” and threatened to increase the fee further.

Trying to stop India’s economy
Rajnath Singh said, “Some countries want the products made in India, the things prepared with Indian hands, become expensive than the rest of the countries, so that the world stops buying them when the price rises.” He expressed confidence that now no power in the world can stop India from becoming a major global power.

Strengthening of defense exports
Describing the defense sector as an example of India’s strength, the Defense Minister said, “We are exporting defense products worth more than Rs 24,000 crore. It is the new defense sector of new India and exports are continuously increasing.” He clarified that the tariff dispute has not affected the region.
