Police will file an appeal against the court order

A court located in Chandausi of Sambhal district has ordered to register an FIR against the then police area officer (CO) Anuj Chaudhary, the then Kotwali in-charge Anuj Tomar and unknown policemen in the Sambhal violence case. However, a senior police officer said that the administration will file an appeal against this order.

The order was passed by Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Vibhanshu Sudhir on a petition filed by the father of a person injured in the violence on January 9 alleging that his son was shot by the police. The complainant accused the then CO Anuj Chaudhary, the then police station in-charge Anuj Tomar and 10-12 unknown policemen.

Judicial investigation has already been done in the matter- SP

Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar Bishnoi had told that the police will challenge the court order. He said, “An appeal will be filed and FIR will not be registered as judicial inquiry has already been conducted in the case.” Anuj Chaudhary is currently posted as Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) in Firozabad, while Anuj Tomar is currently in-charge of Chandausi Kotwali in Sambhal district.

What is the whole controversy?

The controversy began on November 19 last year when Hindu petitioners, including lawyers Hari Shankar Jain and Vishnu Shankar Jain, filed a suit in the Sambhal district court claiming that the Shahi Jama Masjid was built over the already existing Harihar Nath temple. On the same day, a survey was conducted on the orders of the court, after which a second survey was conducted on 24 November. After the second survey, violence broke out in Sambhal, in which 4 people died and 29 policemen were injured.

Police have registered 12 FIRs in connection with the violence, naming over 2,000 people, including several political personalities including SP MP Ziaur Rehman Barke and mosque committee chief Zafar Ali.

In the case of death of a youth by bullet during the violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, the CJM court has ordered to file a case against 12 policemen including Anuj Chaudhary, who was the CO at that time. On which the reaction of Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal Ziaur Rahman Burke has come. He said that no one, neither uniform nor position, is above the law.

SP MP Ziaur Rahman Burke posted on his social media account X after the court’s decision and wrote – ‘No one is above the law – neither uniform, nor position. The CJM court’s order to register an FIR against 12 policemen including the then CO in the case of shooting of a youth during the Sambhal violence is a historic decision.

CJM court ordered to register FIR

In fact, Yameen, who lives in Nakhasa police station of Sambhal, had filed a petition in the CJM court on 6 February 2025, in which he had accused the police of shooting and killing his son Alam. He claimed in the petition that his son had left the house to buy some goods from the shop when he was shot.

He made 12 policemen including the then CO Anuj Chaudhary, Kotwali Inspector Anuj Tomar accused in this case. After the hearing on this matter, the CJM court has ordered to register an FIR against all of them. This decision of the court is in the headlines.

Violence broke out during the survey of Shahi Jama Masjid

Former CO of Sambhal district Anuj Chaudhary was promoted by the UP government and made Additional SP (ASP). He is a 2012 batch PPS officer and now he is the first police officer to reach this post from sports quota. Earlier, no officer from the sports quota had reached the post of Additional SP.

Choudhary joined police service through sports quota in 2012.

Anuj Chaudhary had entered the police service in 2012 from sports quota. Anuj Chaudhary is also known for clear statements. Apart from this, he had taken strict action regarding the violence in Sambhal. Anuj Chaudhary is originally a resident of Baheri village of Muzaffarnagar. Before joining the police, he was an international level wrestler. He participated in the national championship continuously from 1997 to 2014.

He won silver medals in the 2002 and 2010 National Games. He also won medals in the Asian Championships from 2005 to 2009. Anuj, who won the silver medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, also represented India in the 2004 Athens Olympics. After promotion, Anuj Choudhary was honored by SP KK Bishnoi and ASP Rajesh Kumar Srivastava by putting Ashoka Pillar on his uniform.

According to the information available till February 2025, around 80 people have been arrested in the Sambhal violence so far and the search for many is going on.
