There are many stories related to Teej fast and all are related to Shiva-Parvati. According to the legend, once Goddess Sati reached her father’s house for a yagya without being invited. There the father said many things mocking Lord Shiva. Sati could not bear the insult of her husband Shiva and sacrificed her body in the fire of Havan Kund.

While leaving her body, she promised her father that she would always return as the wife of Lord Shiva in every birth. Sati’s next birth was as Parvati. In this birth, Mother Parvati did hard penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. He observed strict fasts for years, lived in the forests and lived only on fruits, flowers and leaves.

Finally, pleased with Sati’s years of penance, Shiva appeared to her and accepted her as his wife. The tradition of Saubhagya Sundari Vrat has been going on since then. This fast is considered a symbol of love, harmony and stability in married life.
