US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a much awaited meeting on Saturday (16 August 2025) in Alaska. Trump described this dialogue as extremely useful. However, no concrete agreement has been reached yet regarding the Ukraine ceasefire.

Trump said that some issues have been agreed, but work is still left on big issues. There is no agreement until the agreement is done. At the same time, Putin said that some extent has been agreed in the conversation. He appreciated Trump’s friendly conversation. After this talk that lasted for about three hours, the two leaders interacted with the media, but refrained from answering questions.

India and tariff issue

In an interview given before the meeting, Trump, while referring to India, said that Russia has lost a big oil customer. He (Russia) has lost India, which was producing about 40% oil. If I imposed a secondary restriction, it will be disastrous for Russia. Trump had recently announced a 50% tariff imposing a 50% tariff citing Russian oil imports on India. Half a fee i.e. 25 percent tariffs have already come into force on 7 August. The remaining 25 percent will be applicable from August 27. In his executive order, Trump wrote that it is correct and necessary to impose additional value on importing oil from Russia directly or indirectly.

Status on Ukraine-Russia War

The main agenda of the meeting was the Russia-Ukraine war. Putin said that if Trump had been President in 2022, the Russia-Ukraine war would not have started. He warned the European Union not to disrupt the progress made in Alaska’s talks. Trump admitted that there was progress on some issues, but the situation of peace agreement is still far away.

Trump has imposed 50% tariff on India

Trump’s comment is directly related to oil trade between India and Russia and possible charges on China. Trump warned last month that secondary sanctions would be imposed on countries trading from Moscow. He had threatened to put 100 percent tariff on Russia and gave him 50 days to end the Ukraine war. India is already facing the impact of these steps. Trump had imposed 25 percent tariffs on India, which was reduced to 50 percent after a few days. Half of these fees have been implemented and the remaining will be applicable on August 27.

Finance Minister warning

US Finance Minister Scott Besant told Bloomberg TV that if things are not good in the trump-Putin meeting held in Alaska, then secondary fees can be increased on India. He also alleged that India is taking a slight stance in business talks with America.

What is India’s attitude on Trump’s tariff?

India has clarified many times that its relations with America are multidimensional and broad and business is just a part of it. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs had said that relations between countries should not be seen “by third party glasses”.

Nato sanction threat: NATO General Secretary Mark Rute on Wednesday warned that if countries like India, China and Brazil continue to trade with Russia, they could be imposed huge secondary sanctions. He made this statement during a meeting with senators in the US Parliament.

The statement came at a time when US President Donald Trump has announced a new weapon to Ukraine and also threatened to impose 100% tax on Russian export countries, if there is no peace agreement in 50 days.

Fear Rute- Putin will try to win war in the next 50 days
Mark Rute said that he is afraid that Russian President Vladimir Putin may use these 50 days to capture more land in the war and to turn peace talks in his favor by killing more people. He said, “We should say that we will not recognize whatever Putin will do in the next 50 days,” he said, “We will not recognize him on the table of conversation.”

Europe will give money, America will give weapons- new agreement
Rute reported that a new agreement has been reached between the US and Europe, under which the US will give a large amount of weapons to Ukraine, not only air defense, but also missiles, ammunition and other weapons. Warn to India, China and Brazil- Talk to Putin
Rute directly warned the three countries, saying, “If you are the President of Beijing, Delhi or Brazil, now is the time to think because it can be very heavy for you.” He appealed that countries like India, China and Brazil should talk to Putin and ask them to take peace talks seriously, otherwise these countries may get a huge economic shock.
