Mirage 2000: Indian Air Force (IAF) Headquarters is seriously considering inducting the indigenous Astra Mk 1 Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile (BVRAAM) in the upgraded fleet of Mirage 2000 fighter aircraft. This decision can play an important role in bridging the capability gap of the Air Force till the arrival of foreign next generation missiles.

Currently, the Indian Air Force’s Mirage 2000 aircraft rely on MICA IR and MICA RF missiles, whose effective strike range is said to be around 80 kilometers. According to defense sources, this range is now considered less than the long-range missile systems available with regional rivals, which may impact air combat capability.

Work continues on MICA NG

According to the report of idrw.org, European defense company MBDA is working on the next generation MICA NG (New Generation) missile, whose estimated range will be 150 to 160 kilometers. This missile has been confirmed to be compatible with India’s upgraded Mirage 2000 5 aircraft. However, its delivery is expected by the end of 2028-29, while full operational clearance may take an additional 3 to 4 years due to the testing and integration process.

Upgraded Mirage 2000 equipped with RDY 2 radar

Thales RDY 2 all-weather synthetic aperture radar has been installed in the upgraded Mirage 2000 aircraft of the Indian Air Force. This radar is capable of tracking fighter targets with 5 square meter radar cross section from a distance of 120 to 140 kilometers. Earlier Mirage variants had Thomson CSF RDM radar, but the RDY 2 is now considered more capable for multi-mode and BVR warfare. If the Astra Mk 1 is approved for inclusion in the Mirage 2000, it will require technical collaboration with Thales. With this, an accurate data link can be established between the RDY 2 radar and the Astra missile, so that the fire and forget capability and guidance of the missile remains fully effective. Astra Mk 1 has already been successfully operationalized on Su 30MKI and Tejas fighter aircraft.

Strategic benefits will come soon from indigenous option

While MICA NG may have to wait until the early 2030s for full deployment, Astra Mk 1 appears to be a timely, cost-effective and indigenous interim solution. The deployment of Astra Mk 1 with the strong detection capability of the RDY 2 radar can quickly increase the striking range and lethality of the Mirage 2000 fleet.

Self-reliant India will get a big boost

The decision to include Astra Mk 1 in Mirage 2000 will strengthen the Self-reliant India initiative. This will not only lead to widespread use of indigenous missile systems, but will also reduce dependence on foreign upgrades. Additionally, it will help keep the Mirage 2000 aircraft relevant in future challenging air combat scenarios.

The latest report released by global think tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on Monday (December 1, 2025) contains a list of the top 100 arms manufacturing companies around the world, in which the names of three Indian companies have also been included.

Which Indian companies are included in the list?,

According to the latest report of SIPRI, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which manufactures Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas fighter jet in India, is ranked 44th in the list of 100 top arms manufacturing companies in the world. At the same time, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which manufacturers radar and electronic warfare systems, is at 58th position. Mazagon Dockyard Limited (MDL), which manufactures warships and submarines in India, is ranked 91st in SIPRI’s list.

4 American companies among top-5 arms companies

According to the report, four of the world’s top-5 arms manufacturing companies are from America alone, which includes Lockheed Martin, RTX, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics. One of the first five companies is England based BAE Systems, which is at fourth place in the list.

Record level income from military arms and services in 2024

Global thinktank SIPRI has released its new report titled ‘The SIPRI Top 100 Arms-Producing and Military Services Companies, 2024’ on Monday (December 1, 2025). According to which, the income from sales of the world’s top 100 arms and military services manufacturing companies has reached a record figure of $ 679 billion in 2024.

Talking about the income of America’s top-3 arms companies Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics, the combined income of these three American companies increased by 3.8 percent to reach $334 billion in 2024. 39 American companies are included in the list of world’s top 100 companies, out of which 30 companies have registered an increase in their income.

In the All India meeting held in Jabalpur, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Dattatreya Hosabale spoke in detail on many issues and rejected Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s statement banning RSS.

Responding to Kharge’s statement, Hosabale said, “Talks of banning the Sangh have been made thrice already, but there should be some reason for banning. The society has completely accepted the Sangh.” He said that at present 8399 branches of the Sangh are active and special work is going on to expand the branches in tribal areas.

Sangh’s ideology should reach every person – Hosabale

Hosabale said that 86,000 Hindu conferences will be organized in the coming time, so that the message of Sangh’s ‘Panch Parivartan’ and Hindu unity reaches the society. He told that soon the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, 350th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur and the birth anniversary of Lord Birsa Munda will be specially celebrated. He said, “Lord Birsa Munda was not just a tribal leader but a leader of the entire society. He fought to stop religious conversions.” Hosabale said that on the completion of 150 years of the song ‘Vande Mataram’, programs will be organized across the country and people will be informed about its historical importance.

He told that in the RSS meeting, emphasis was laid on strengthening indigenous and self-reliant India. Regarding caste census, he said that it should not be seen from political point of view, but from the point of view of removing social inequality.

“The situation in Bengal is dire, needs attention”

He said that enmity has increased in Bengal due to political reasons and considering the border situation of the state, the Center should pay special attention. Hosabale clarified that RSS is not an organization associated with any political party, but maintains dialogue with all sections and religions of the society.

Concern expressed over infiltration and population imbalance

He said that for the last 20 years, RSS has been discussing issues like infiltration, conversion and population imbalance. Regarding this, he said, “It is the responsibility of the government to implement population control.”

A new dimension is going to be added to India-Russia relations and indigenous aviation sector. Indigenous government aviation company HAL has signed an agreement with Russia to manufacture Sukhoi Superjet (SJ-100) passenger aircraft. This agreement was signed in Moscow on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) in the presence of DK Sunil, CMD of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

HAL issued an official statement saying that these SJ-100 (Sukhoi Superjet) aircraft will be used for short distance connectivity under the UDAN scheme. However, HAL did not clarify how many aircraft have been agreed to be manufactured in India and when the production will start, but the aviation company definitely said that currently around 200 aircraft are required in the country under the UDAN scheme. Also, if international tourist destinations in the Indian Ocean region (like Sri Lanka, Maldives etc.) are added to this, then 350 additional aircraft will be required.

Russia-India’s first agreement on manufacturing civil aircraft

The two-in engine SJ-100 aircraft is manufactured by Russian government company, Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PHSC-UAC). In Russia, 200 such aircraft are used by 16 commercial airlines for domestic flights.

According to HAL, SJ-100 will prove to be a game changer for short distance flights. Also, the partnership between HAL and UAC is the result of trust in each other. HAL has indigenously manufactured about 250 Sukhoi fighter aircraft and 600 MiG-21 fighter jets for the Indian Air Force under license from Russia. But this is the first agreement of its kind with Russia for civil aircraft.

India moving towards self-reliance in civil aviation sector

This is also the first civil aircraft for HAL. At present, apart from indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, HAL manufactures Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachanda, Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv and HTT (trainer) aircraft. These are all military aircraft. However, in 1961, HAL also manufactured the Avro (AVRO HS-748) passenger aircraft. But this project was stopped in 1988.

According to HAL, the construction of SJ-100 aircraft is the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Indian aviation industry. This is a step towards realizing the dream of ‘self-reliant India’ in the civil aviation sector. Manufacturing will also strengthen the private sector and create direct and indirect employment opportunities in the aviation industry.

Rare Earth Magnet Production: Taking a step towards self-reliance, the Government of India is about to launch a new scheme of Rs 7,350 crore for Rare Earth Permanent Magnet (REPM) production. The main objective of this scheme is to increase its production in India and reduce dependence on its imports from abroad. This decision is being linked to China’s decision when it had banned REPM exports in April this year. Due to which India’s automobile and electronics sectors were dealt a major blow.

Under this decision, the Government of India has planned to start 5 integrated REPM manufacturing units. Under which a target of 6000 tonnes production has been set annually. To further support this decision, the Government of India has also announced subsidy. Companies will be given 15 percent subsidy.

What is the objective of the Government of India?

The Government of India wants to create an ecosystem of rare earth permanent magnet production in the country, so that dependence on foreign countries can be reduced. If we talk about the present time, India imports 100 percent of its REPM requirements from abroad. There may also be problems due to the ongoing turmoil at the global level. Therefore, India wants to be self-reliant, so that it does not have to depend on anyone else for automobile, electronics, wind energy and defense sectors.

Under this scheme, 5 manufacturing units will be established in India. Out of which each unit will produce between 600 tonnes to 1200 tonnes every year according to its capacity. The Government of India has set a time limit of 7 years to accomplish this target. A ministerial monitoring committee will also be formed by the government. Who will ensure that the pace of the plan is good and it achieves the target on time.

Many strict steps against Pakistan
