Russian President Vladimir Putin is visiting India on October 4 and this visit of about 30 hours is considered very important for Global Politics and Trade. This will be his first visit to India after the Ukraine War, in which major decisions on Trade Agreements and Defense Cooperation are possible. In such a situation, the eyes of the world are on which direction India will move amidst Geopolitical Tensions, Tariffs War and changing Global Alliances. Trade Tariffs have been the most important aspect of this whole story. In April, additional tariffs were imposed on more than 100 countries including India and due to buying discounted crude oil from Russia, the pressure of 50% extra tariffs on India increased further. US President Trump continues to warn that India will face severe punishment if it increases trade with Russia. For this reason, India reduced oil purchases from Russia to a great extent, whereas this trade used to give Indian companies a profit of more than Rs 1 lakh crore every year and the Rupee-Ruble Settlement also strengthened the foreign reserve. Now the future of Russian Oil Purchase is also in trouble. Trade numbers of India and Russia also show a big difference. India’s exports to Russia are only US$4.9B while imports reach US$63.8B. With 80–90% of trade in commodities like Crude Oil and Fertilizers, the trade deficit increases manifold. If we look at India-US trade, Export is US$87.3B and Import is US$41.5B, which makes US India’s largest and high-value trade partner. Despite this, India is working on creating new trade alliances. After the Shanghai Summit, there have been signs of improvement in India-China economic relations and regulations are being eased for Chinese firms in many sectors, and work is also going on to increase India’s exports in IT and Biomedicine.

China on Tuesday (25 November 2025) denied allegations that an Indian woman from Arunachal Pradesh was harassed at Shanghai airport. China said that the action taken by Chinese immigration officials was in accordance with the law and rules.

China denies allegation of harassment of Indian woman

Pema Wangjom Thongdok, an Indian citizen living in Britain, was going from London to Japan on 21 November. He claimed that his three-hour scheduled stay took a turn for the worse when the immigration officials declared his passport invalid simply because Arunachal Pradesh was mentioned as his birthplace.

When asked to respond to the incident with Thongdok, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning claimed that the woman was not subjected to any kind of compulsory measures, detention or harassment, as she has alleged. Mao Ning said that the airline had also made arrangements for rest, food and drinks for him.

Jangnan is our area: China

He said, “We learned that China’s border inspection authorities have completed all procedures in accordance with laws and regulations and fully protected the legal rights and interests of the person concerned.” He also reiterated China’s claims on Arunachal Pradesh, which it calls Jangnan or South Tibet. He said, “Jangnan is a part of China. China has never recognized the so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India.”

India strongly protested

Sources in Delhi said that India had lodged a strong protest (demarche – a formal diplomatic protest) with China both in Beijing and Delhi on the day of the incident. India clearly told the Chinese side that Arunachal Pradesh is Indian territory without any doubt and the people there have every right to hold Indian passports and travel with it.

He said that the Indian Consulate in Shanghai also took up the matter at the local level and provided full assistance to the stranded passenger. Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday said she was deeply shocked by the incident and called it a violation of international standards and an attack on the dignity of Indian citizens.

Statement of Indian citizen Pema Wangjom Thongdok

Indian citizen Pema Wangjom Thongdok posted on social media that she was detained by Chinese immigration officials at Shanghai airport for 18 hours on the grounds that her passport was invalid as Arunachal Pradesh was listed as her birthplace.

With the help of a friend living in Britain, she somehow managed to contact the Indian Consulate in Shanghai. According to the information, the Consulate officials helped him board a late night flight from the Chinese city.

The border dispute between India and China regarding Arunachal Pradesh is decades old, but adding to this dispute, a new case has come to light, in which a woman resident of Arunachal Pradesh has been severely tortured in China. The woman has alleged that the Chinese authorities had refused to accept her Indian passport as valid. Chinese officials detained and tortured the woman for 18 hours at Shanghai Airport.

Pema Wang Thongdok, a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, said that Chinese immigration officials detained her at the airport for 18 hours on Friday (November 21, 2025). He claimed that Arunachal Pradesh is a part of China, hence the Indian passport of a woman born in Arunachal is invalid. Actually, Pema Wang Thongdok was going from London to Japan on November 21, 2025, but in the meantime her plane stopped for three hours at Shanghai Airport in China, where Chinese officials stopped the woman and took her into custody.

The woman gave information about the incident on X

Pema Wang Thongdok, a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, posted about the incident in China on social media platform In the post, Pema said, ‘Due to China Immigration and China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited, I was detained for more than 18 hours at Shanghai Airport on Friday (November 21, 2025). They declared my Indian passport invalid because my birthplace is in Arunachal Pradesh, which they declared to be Chinese territory.

According to Thongdok’s statement, Chinese immigration officials had declared his Indian passport invalid after seeing Arunachal Pradesh listed as his birthplace. After this, Chinese officials refused to recognize his Indian citizenship and said that Arunachal is a part of China. Chinese authorities also confiscated his passport and he was barred from boarding onward flights despite having a valid visa for Japan. At the same time, after an Indian woman was taken hostage at Shanghai Airport, Chinese officials tortured her by starving her for 18 hours.

An Indian-origin UK resident woman of Arunachal Pradesh origin has alleged that immigration officials at China’s Shanghai Airport refused to accept her Indian passport and harassed her by detaining her for hours. The woman says that her place of birth was Arunachal Pradesh mentioned in the passport, so the officials declared the passport ‘illegal’ and said that ‘Arunachal Pradesh is a part of China.’

Passport stopped as ‘illegal’
Pima Wangjom Thongdok was flying from London to Japan on November 21 and had a three-hour transit at Shanghai Pudong Airport. According to the allegation, the officials at the immigration counter, after seeing his passport, said that it was not valid because Arunachal Pradesh was written in the place of birth. When he asked the reason, he got the answer – ‘Arunachal is a part of China, hence your passport is invalid.’

Allegations of detention and torture for 18 hours
Pima told that the small process of transit turned into an ordeal of 18 hours. His passport was confiscated and he was not allowed to board onward flights, even though his visa was valid. They were denied access to food, information and basic facilities. China Eastern Airlines and immigration staff made fun of him. They were even taunted by saying ‘get a Chinese passport’. She said that last year also she had transited through Shanghai and there was no problem then. He had even already confirmed with the Chinese Embassy in London that Indian passengers can travel without any hassle in transit.

Pressure of new ticket, financial loss
Pima claims that she was repeatedly pressurized by saying that she should buy a new ticket only from China Eastern, only then her passport would be returned. During this time, she could not book the ticket again, could not change the terminal, and even craved for food. There was also financial loss due to missed flights and cancellation of hotel bookings.

Indian Consulate provided relief
After being stranded for several hours, she was able to contact the Indian Consulate in Shanghai with the help of a friend in the UK. After that the Indian authorities intervened and got him released from there by a late night flight.

Demand for action from Indian Government
Pima has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior officials saying that the treatment meted to her is a ‘direct insult to the sovereignty of India and the citizens of Arunachal Pradesh’.

He has demanded that the Indian government should raise this issue with Beijing on immigration and disciplinary action should be taken against the airline staff and compensation for financial loss. He also said that it should be ensured that Indian citizens of Arunachal Pradesh do not face such problems while traveling in future.

In the direction of normalizing India-China relations, China Eastern Airlines is preparing to restart round-trip flights between Shanghai and New Delhi from 9 November 2025. This flight between the two cities will run every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. The airline will use Airbus A330-200 wide-body aircraft on this route, in which passengers will get better comfort and Wi-Fi facilities during long distance travel.

Flight timings between New Delhi-Shanghai

China Eastern Airlines flight MU563 will depart from Shanghai at 12:50 pm and reach Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport at 5:45 pm. Whereas flight MU564 will depart from Delhi at 7:55 pm and reach Shanghai at 4:10 am the next morning. The airline has also started selling tickets for this route, which is expected to strengthen the trade, education, technology and tourism sectors.

Connectivity between the two countries will increase: Airlines

During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin in August this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping had announced the resumption of direct flights between selected cities of the two countries. On behalf of China Eastern Airlines, it was said that this step will add new energy to the contacts and business relations between the two countries.

Indigo had also announced to start flights

Earlier this month, IndiGo had announced to start daily flights from Kolkata to Guangzhou, China from October 26. The airline is also expected to start flight operations between Delhi and Guangzhou. IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers had said on October 3, “We are extremely excited to announce the resumption of direct flights between India and China. We are proud to be among the first airlines to launch direct flights to China from two cities. This step will also strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Flights between India and China were stopped during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, even after everything was back on track, flights between the two countries did not start. Due to the violent clash in Galwan Valley and failure to agree on the air bubble agreement, aviation links between the two countries remained stalled for a long time.
