Stock Market Closing Bell: The ongoing rise in the Indian stock market for the last two trading sessions came to a halt on Tuesday. Both the benchmark indices closed almost flat in volatile trading. BSE Sensex fell 42 points, while NSE Nifty was in marginal gain. The market came down due to profit booking in shares of information technology and pharmaceutical companies.

Situation of Sensex and Nifty 50

The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 42.64 points or 0.05 percent to close at 85,524.84. During trading, it rose to a high of 85,704.93 points and fell to a low of 85,342.99 points.

The 50-share NSE Nifty closed at 26,177.15, up marginally by 4.75 points or 0.02 percent. Buying was seen in shares of metal, FMCG and energy sectors, while shares of IT and pharmaceutical sectors remained under pressure.

Top loser and top gainer

Among Sensex stocks, Infosys, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Tech Mahindra, Eternal, Axis Bank and Maruti were major losers. On the other hand, the stocks in profit include ITC, UltraTech Cement, Tata Steel and HDFC Bank.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said, amid mixed signals from the global market, the domestic market remained in a limited range and closed stable. Selling pressure remained across most sectors, although financials and FMCG sectors provided minor support.

He said, investors are now making their strategies for the upcoming quarterly results of companies. We are also keeping an eye on the policy prospects of the Federal Reserve, because the possibility of cutting interest rates in the January meeting is gradually increasing. BSE Smallcap index related to small companies rose 0.38 percent while Midcap index related to medium companies gained 0.07 percent.

Religare Broking Ltd. Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President (Research), said that on the day of weekly closing of deals in the futures and options segment, the market remained sluggish and after the recent rise, it closed with almost stable trend.

In other markets in Asia, South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei and China’s Shanghai Composite remained in the positive zone, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed with a decline. A mixed trend was seen in the afternoon trading in European markets.

Stock Market Today: The second trading session of the week in the Indian stock market on Tuesday, December 23, started on a positive note. Major benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 opened trading in the green.

However, a decline was seen in the market in early trading itself. The 30-share BSE Sensex index opened at 85,690.10 with a rise of 122.62 points or 0.14 per cent, while the NSE Nifty 50 opened at 26,205.20 with a rise of 32.80 points or 0.13 per cent.

By around 9:25 am, the Sensex was trading at 85,439 points, down by 127 points, while the Nifty 50 was trading at 26,151, down 21 points.

How was the market on Monday?

On Monday, December 22, there was a tremendous rise in the Indian stock market and both the major benchmark indices closed trading in the green. Sensex rose by 638.12 points or 0.75 percent to 85,567.48 points, while NSE Nifty 50 jumped by 206.00 points or 0.79 percent to end the trading day at 26,172.40.

Trent, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech and Sun Pharma were gainers from the BSE basket. Talking about the top losers, SBIN, Kotal Bank and Bajaj Finance were.

There was a rise in the shares of Nifty IT, Nifty Smallcap 100, Nifty FMCG, Nifty Bank, Nifty Auto and Nifty 100. On Monday’s trading day, 25 shares from the BSE basket closed in the green and 5 shares recorded a decline.
