Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has taken serious cognizance of the video related to a demonstration that took place in the Sabarmati campus on 6 January 2026. In these videos, objectionable, provocative and provocative slogans raised by some students associated with JNSU have come to light. Now the statement of JNU administration has come out regarding this sloganeering.

Regarding this incident, the JNU administration has instructed the security branch of the university to cooperate in the police investigation. The administration says that such slogans are not in accordance with the spirit of democratic dissent and are a violation of the JNU code of conduct.

‘There may be an adverse impact on the country’s security’

The administration further said, “Such acts can adversely affect public order, peace and harmony on campus, as well as the security of the university and the country. This behavior also shows disrespect for constitutional institutions and the established norms of civilized democratic discourse.”

‘Understand the clear distinction between abuse and hate speech’

The JNU administration has appealed to all to understand the clear distinction between dissent, misconduct and hate speech, as hate speech leads to public unrest.

‘Cooperate in maintaining peace and harmony on campus’

The appeal further said, “Also, everyone is requested to desist from such inappropriate activities and cooperate in maintaining peace and harmony in the campus, otherwise strict action will be taken as per the rules.

There is an atmosphere of great sadness and despair in the native village Kako of Jehanabad district of Bihar due to the decision of not getting relief from the Supreme Court to Sharjeel Imam of Jehanabad, accused in the famous Delhi riots case. Uncle Arshad Imam says that Sharjeel is completely innocent and he will definitely get justice, even if late.

In fact, in the Delhi riots case, the Supreme Court, after hearing seven accused in this case, granted bail to five, while Sharjeel Imam and Omar Khalid did not get any relief. The five accused who have been granted bail by the court in this case include Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa-ur-Rehman, Mohammad Salim Khan and Shadab Ahmed. Whereas the bail petitions of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam were rejected.

Sharjeel’s uncle said – nephew is innocent

Here, after the decision of the Supreme Court, people in Kako village seem disappointed. Sharjeel Imam’s uncle Arshad Imam, reacting to the court’s decision, said that he fully respects the decision of the Supreme Court. He said that my nephew Sharjeel Imam is innocent. For now, the entire decision will be read carefully and after that a decision will be taken regarding further legal process.

He also said that he has full faith in the judicial system and will take the next step only within the ambit of law. Sooner or later, Sharjeel will get justice.

After this decision, Sharjeel Imam’s mother Afsa Rahim is in shock and is crying badly. She refused to say anything before coming in front of the media. Let us tell you that Sharjeel Imam has studied from IIT Mumbai and has been a research scholar in JNU. He is a resident of Kako village in Jehanabad district. His father Akbar Imam was a leader of JDU and had also contested the Jehanabad assembly elections from JDU and lost in a close contest to RJD candidate Dr. Sachchidanand Yadav.

Sharjeel Imam is in jail since 2020

Sharjeel Imam played an important role in Delhi’s Shaheenbagh movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Cases were registered in many states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Assam regarding his alleged statements. Sharjeel Imam was arrested by Delhi Police from Kako, Jehanabad on 28 January 2020 and since then he is in jail.

More than 50 people died in Delhi riots

It is noteworthy that in the year 2020, 53 people were killed in the violence in Delhi, hundreds were injured and property and businesses were damaged on a large scale. In the last five years, as part of this larger conspiracy, the police have taken action against student activists and local leaders who are said to be associated with anti-CAA protests.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to deny bail to activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. He said that those who pushed the city into the fire of violence should get the harshest punishment. The Supreme Court on Monday (05 January) clearly refused to grant bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the Delhi riots case. However, the court gave relief to five other accused in this case and granted bail.

CM Rekha Gupta said, “The bail of 2020 Delhi riots accused Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam was rejected by the Supreme Court.” We welcome the decision of the Honorable Court. Those people who pushed Delhi into riots should get the harshest punishment. A strong message should also be given to those political parties who supported such rioters, they too deserve punishment.

What did Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra say?

Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra also gave his reaction on this. He said, “The Supreme Court’s decision has confirmed that the riots were the result of a well-planned conspiracy. Today’s decision once again proves that a deliberate conspiracy was hatched against the people of Delhi. This decision gives a clear message that such conspiracies will not be tolerated.

Court’s order will become an example- Ashish Sood

Meanwhile, Delhi Government Home Minister Ashish Sood said, “The court’s order will set an example for those working against the country.” There is nothing wrong in opposing the government, but opposing the country is a different thing. It is unfortunate that some people show sympathy towards those accused of working against the country.

Rioters should be given strict punishment – Manjinder Singh Sirsa

Along with this, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa in Rekha Gupta’s government said that the rioters should be given strict punishment. He thanked the Supreme Court for giving a strong message. The minister said, “Nobody has the right to create unrest or take lives of innocent people. Such decisions can help prevent violence in the future. In February 2020, 53 people were killed and more than 700 were injured in the riots in North-East Delhi.

Political rhetoric has intensified after the Supreme Court rejected the bail plea of Omar Khalid in the UAPA case related to Delhi riots. Union Minister Giriraj Singh gave a sharp reaction and compared Omar Khalid with terrorist Kasab and said that whatever Kasab did, Omar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam are doing the same thing.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision and said, “What Kasab did, Umar Khalid is doing the same thing. People like Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam are doing the same things and activities that Pakistan does. Creating an atmosphere against the country is also a kind of terrorist act. Such people should be given harsher punishment than Kasab.”

Know what the Supreme Court said in its decision?

The Supreme Court said in its decision that in strict laws like UAPA, the rules of bail are different from normal cases. Citing Section 43D(5), the court said that while considering bail, it is seen whether the material of the prosecution makes out a prima facie offense or not.

The court also made it clear that ‘terrorist acts’ are not limited to violence only. Rather, a conspiracy to harm the country’s system, essential services and economy also comes under its purview.

Khalid was accused of inflammatory speech in Delhi riots

Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam are accused of giving inflammatory speeches, conspiring and playing a role in spreading violence during the 2020 Delhi riots. Investigating agencies claim that these activities posed a threat to the unity and security of the country. In this case, other five accused have got bail from the Supreme Court, but Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam did not get relief.

Other BJP leaders also expressed satisfaction over the decision and said that the law should be strictly implemented in matters related to the country’s security. The Supreme Court also said that delay in trial is a serious issue, but while deciding on bail, the court has to take the decision only within the ambit of law.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (September 2) gave a big blow to student activists Sharjil Imam, Omar Khalid and other accused in the case related to Delhi riots. The court dismissed the bail plea of all the accused in the UAPA case related to Delhi riots in 2020.

A bench of Justice Naveen Chawla and Justice Shalinder Kaur reserved their verdict on 9 July after hearing the arguments of all the parties. Shaizil Imam and Omar Khalid along with Mohammad Salim Khan, Shifa ur Rehman, Athar Khan, Miran Haider, Abdul Khalid Saifi and Gulfisha Fatima reserved their verdict. The court dismissed everyone’s petition.

When was the arrest?

What is the allegation?

According to the news agency PTI, the prosecution strongly argued that it is not only a case of riots, but is a case where the riots were already made with a horrific motive and thought conspiracy.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that it was a conspiracy to discredit India globally and could not be the basis of only long imprisoned bail.

In the riots in February 2020, 53 people died and more than 700 people were injured. The violence erupted during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Civil Register (NRC).

The bail petitions of the Sharjil Imam, Khalid Saifi, Gulfisha Fatima and other accused were pending in the High Court since 2022 and from time to time various benches heard them.
