This month of December was one of fear and silence for Hindus in the neighboring country Bangladesh. The brutal killing of many Hindus in just 10 days has raised concerns about regional security and human rights. Families locked in their homes, houses destroyed by fire and incidents of murder even among security forces are raising the question whether the safety of minorities is being ensured in the neighboring country and what steps can the Indian government take to stop it. Let us understand.

How many innocents were killed in 10 days?

This series of attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh became most intense in December. First, 27-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death in Mymensingh district and later burnt. Authorities later said the blasphemy charge was false. A week later, 29-year-old Amrit Mandal was beaten to death by a mob in Pangsha of Rajbari district. The third incident took place in the same Mymensingh district, where 40-year-old Bajendra Biswas was shot by his Muslim colleague Noman Mian.

Dipu Chandra Das – False allegation took his life

Dipu Chandra Das worked in a garment factory in Bhaluka. Rumors were spread against him that he made objectionable remarks. At around 9 pm, a crowd of hundreds of people caught him and beat him brutally. After his death the mob tied him to a tree and burnt him. This incident is being considered the most gruesome example of increasing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.

Amrit Mandal- Mob lynched

A week after Deepu’s murder, Amrit Mandal was murdered in Pangsha of Rajbari district. At night, some people along with him went to Shahidul’s house, then the local people raised the alarm of dacoit-robber and the mob caught hold of Amrit and started beating him. Amrit died in the hospital after being badly injured by kicks, punches and sticks.

Bajendra Biswas – No one is safe even in security forces

Bajendra Biswas, 40, who was a member of the Ansar force, was shot dead by his Muslim companion Noman Mian in Bhaluka, Mymensingh district. Biswas, posted at Sultana Sweaters Factory, became the target while on duty. His own companion shot him in the thigh and Biswas died. This incident shows that now the security personnel engaged in protecting the minorities are also in danger.

Attacks on Hindu families and burning of houses

Apart from the killings, houses of 5-6 Hindu families were set on fire in Pirojpur district. At night, when the families were sleeping, the miscreants also locked the doors from outside. The families managed to escape with their lives. Such incidents show that minority communities in Bangladesh are under constant threat.

Indian Government’s intervention and possible steps

Experts believe that the Indian government should exert diplomatic pressure to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. This could include high-level talks, joint security monitoring, and applying pressure through human rights groups. Additionally, a message can also be sent by taking temporary steps on visa policy, trade and cultural cooperation for Bangladesh in India.

Uncertainty and political turmoil are increasing in Bangladesh ahead of next year’s elections. Bangladesh’s radical Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami has warned interim government chief Mohammad Yunus that if any member of his government works for any political party, people will take to the streets. The party said that everyone knows what happened to those who acted like puppets of the party.

The parties that had earlier worked with Yunus to oust the democratically elected government of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League are now at loggerheads over reform proposals.

According to the report of Bangladeshi newspaper The Daily Star, on Monday (October 20, 2025), a rally of the party was held at the North Gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka, which was addressed by Jamaat’s Assistant General Secretary Rafiqul Islam Khan.

Rafiqul Islam Khan said, ‘If any advisor, secretary, election commissioner or police officer wants to work like a party man, he should resign. Everyone knows what happened to those in the administration who acted like puppets of the party. If a person holding a government post works for a political party, then people will not just sit idly by. The rally was organized as part of the fourth phase of the ongoing organized movement by the Jamaat and seven other Islamic parties on five-point demands, which include a November referendum on the July Charter and holding of the upcoming national elections under the proportional representation system.

Reiterating the demands, Rafiqul said, ‘If these demands are not met, the movement of the Jamaat will continue.’ On the other hand, amid growing tension between the Nationalist Party (NCP) over the demand for a public relations system, Jamaat General Secretary Ghulam Porwar advised NCP leaders to avoid competition with the Islamic party.

This comment of Ghulam Porwar has come after the statement of NCP convenor Nahid Islam. Nahid Islam had said in a statement on the social media platform that the demand for proportional representation movement started by the Jamaat is nothing but a well-planned political fraud.

Bangladesh’s Bengali newspaper Prothom Aalo quoted Porwar as saying, ‘AAP is a new student-led political organization. You still have a long way to go to compete with Jamaat-e-Islami. Don’t try to compete with your father immediately after birth. He said that he does not take NCP seriously.

On Friday (September 26, 2025) outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, a large number of people from Bangladeshi Pravasi community gathered and staged a strong protest against Bangladesh’s interim chief advisor Mohammad Yunus. The protesters say that atrocities on religious minorities have increased in Bangladesh since Yunus took power. He raised slogans till Pakistan, which was clearly showing the anger of the migrant community.

The protesters alleged that the situation has worsened since the removal of Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August 2024. The attacks on minority communities, especially Hindus, Buddhists and Christians have intensified. Many people had to leave the country due to violence. A protestor said, “Yunus is pushing Bangladesh towards extremism, the situation is as if Taliban rule.”

Voice of victims and demands

The protesters alleged that Hindu priest Chinmay Krishna Das has been illegally jailed by the Yunus government. Minorities are constantly being murdered and harassed. Yunus captured power by removing the democratically elected Hasina government. They demand that they should leave the post of Yunus and conduct independent elections and the arrested religious leaders should be released immediately.

The protesters reminded that Sheikh Hasina’s government was illegally removed on 5 August 2024. He says that Bangladesh was handed over to Islamic forces and terrorist organizations by demolishing a democratic government.

Yunus’s side at the United Nations

In his address to the United Nations, Mohammad Yunus said, “Bangladesh had recently seen public rebellion and we are now on a journey of change.” He emphasized the important role of Bangladeshi migrant workers. Younus appealed to the host countries to give sympathy and security to the migrants.
