Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has been convicted and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in the case of crimes against humanity. Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wajed on Thursday (20 November 2025) called this entire judicial process a sham and an eyewash.

Bangladesh’s ICT found Sheikh Hasina guilty in three out of five cases and sentenced her in two cases. Haseena was sentenced to life imprisonment in one case and death sentence in the other case. This punishment was given for the violent action taken during the student protests last year.

Question: What is your reaction to Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence?

Sajeeb Wajed: This has been done completely illegally. This is a joke. You have a government that is completely unelected, unconstitutional, illegal. They removed 17 judges of this tribunal and appointed a new judge who has no experience on the trial bench and has said very bad things about my mother in front of everyone. He is clearly biased.

Question: Does this have anything to do with the elections in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: What they have done is that they have blamed my mother. They have again changed the law so that anyone accused of a crime cannot run in elections, which is a complete violation of due process because you cannot ban someone unless they are convicted, so they had to pass this sentence in a hurry. They have also banned our party, Awami League, from the elections. There is no democracy in Bangladesh.

Question: After the death sentence, Bangladesh is now requesting India to send back Sheikh Hasina. Is this appeal correct, what do you think will happen next?

Sajeeb Wajed: There should be a law along with the extradition agreement. First of all, there should be a democratic government, which this government is not. Second, legal procedures should be followed, which has not been done. The process itself should be legal and in Bangladesh the process was completely illegal. On this basis, legally, India cannot extradite my mother. India has no responsibility.

Question: How do you see India’s role in helping and protecting your mother under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi?

Sajeeb Wajed: I will always be grateful to Narendra Prime Minister Modi. He has ensured my mother’s safety. He saved my mother’s life. As the head of a country, he is keeping him under tight security. For this I will always be grateful to the Government of India and the people of India.

Question: How do you think India will react to Bangladesh’s appeal for your mother’s extradition?

Sajeeb Wajed: I am confident that the Modi government will not succumb to the unconstitutional and illegal pressure of the illegal government led by Yunus.

Question: Is Muhammad Yunus government planning any conspiracy to kill your mother?

Sajeeb Wajed: No they won’t be able to kill them. How will they actually enforce the punishment? First of all, they can’t catch them. Second, once the rule of law comes, this entire process will come to an end. Everything in Bangladesh is so illegal and unconstitutional and violates every legal principle that once the rule of law comes in, everything will be struck down in court. This won’t last. Yunus cannot touch my mother.

QuestionIf the Congress Party was in power in India, what would have been its reaction?

Sajeeb Wajed: The Congress party would have done exactly the same. There is rule of law in India and you have constitutional process. You people have always followed the Constitution and laws.

Question: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has not issued a single statement in support of your mother. Is this disappointing for you?

Sajeeb Wajed: No, I have no opinion on this.

Question: How is Pakistan influencing the decisions of Bangladesh Government led by Mohammad Yunus?

Sajeeb Wajed: Pakistan is influencing the decisions of this government. Pakistan has helped this government from the beginning. Pakistan was involved in the protest against my mother. As you have seen, this government is building very close relations with Pakistan and giving a free hand to Pakistani institutions in Bangladesh. Lashkar-e-Taiba, their commander is living and speaking in Bangladesh, and has taken credit for the recent bomb attack in New Delhi, while under Yunus’ rule, Bangladesh is a part of Pakistan and is acting as a haven for terrorists.

Question: Should the Nobel Prize given to Mohammad Yunus be withdrawn in view of the gross violations of human rights in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: Nobel committees never take back their prizes, but look at Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar. He also won the Nobel Prize. The peace prize is actually given through lobbying, but they caused atrocities on the Rohingyas. Now Yunus is making Bangladesh a failed country and an Islamic terrorist country.

Question: Will Sheikh Hasina be able to come to Bangladesh again, what do you think?

Sajeeb Wajed: I have full confidence that she will return to Bangladesh in the future. She is the daughter of Bangladesh. Our party is the biggest. we’re going nowhere. We have lakhs of supporters.

Question: Have Awami League members and leaders been harassed by the current government in Bangladesh?

Sajeeb Wajed: Yes, thousands of our leaders and activists are in jail. We have 100 Parliament members who are in jail. There has been no trial or investigation. There is no charge on them. He has been repeatedly refused bail. He is a political prisoner. But, our party is very big. You cannot arrest everyone because there is no space in jails.

Question: Is Yunus government doing vendetta politics against Sheikh Hasina and her party?

Sajeeb Wajed: Of course, this is political change. Mohammad Yunus has the support of Jamaat-e-Islami, which had killed 30 lakh of our people during the freedom struggle. Our government finally conducted trials for that fight. This is the revenge of the Jamaat and the Jamaat never wanted Bangladesh to be independent from Pakistan. Now Jamaat is trying to come to power with Yunus and make Bangladesh a part of Pakistan.

Bangladesh International Crime Tribunal (ICT) on Monday (17 November 2025) convicted former PM Sheikh Hasina and sentenced her to death. The court also ruled against two associates of Sheikh Hasina, former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chaudhry Abdullah al-Mamun. Bangladesh requested immediate handover of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to Dhaka under the bilateral extradition treaty.

What did Bangladesh say about India?

The Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh issued a statement saying, “India has taken note of the decision given by the Bangladesh International Crime Tribunal in relation to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The court has found the absconding accused Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal guilty and sentenced them for the July massacre. If any country gives asylum to these people guilty of crimes against humanity, it will be a very unfriendly act and will be considered as disregard for justice.”

‘Send Sheikh Hasina back to India’

Bangladesh said that we urge the Indian government to immediately hand over these two culprits to the Bangladeshi authorities without any delay. During this, the Yunus government also mentioned the extradition treaty of 2013. It said that according to the existing extradition treaty between the two countries, it is also India’s mandatory duty to hand over the culprits to Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina came to India after the coup

Sheikh Hasina government had to face student-led protests over the announcement of reservation in government jobs for the children of soldiers involved in the freedom struggle in the year 2024, which gradually took the form of a nationwide movement. The crackdown on protesters led to large-scale violence, forcing Sheikh Hasina to resign as Prime Minister and flee to India.

Following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus reconstituted the ICTY, which in 2024 prosecuted Hasina and others for crimes against humanity over a crackdown on protesters.

In Bangladesh’s International Crime Tribunal, a crime against humanity in a case of crime against humanity was formally framed on Thursday (July 10, 2025) in his absence. The special tribunal has set the date of the onset of the trial on August 3.

A three-member committee headed by Justice Ghulam Murtuja Mojumdar accused Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzman Khan and former police chief Chaudhary Abdullah al-Mamoon on five charges. According to the AFP report, Hasina and Khan are being prosecuted in their absence.

The prosecution counsel told reporters, “Bangladesh International Crime Tribunal (ICT-BD) has also framed charges against Sheikh Hasina as well as home minister during his rule, Asdujman Khan Kamal and (erstwhile) Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chaudhary Abdullah al Mamoon.”

Allegations of massacre, murder and torture also

The three have ordered a crime against humanity for their efforts to suppress the protests led by students in July-August last year. The prosecutors said that Hasina has also been accused of massacres, murder and torture to suppress the rebellion against Hasina.

He said that the only present accused Mamoon was produced before the court, where he has accepted his crime. The remaining two accused, Sheikh Hasina and Asdujman Khan, will be prosecuted. Sheikh Hasina moved to India on August 5, 2024 after the Awami League government was overthrown due to the violent student agitation last year.

The Yunus government has demanded the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India

Let me tell you that earlier Bangladesh acting Mohammad Yunus government on Wednesday urged India to take care of “Vivek and Ethics” in dealing with Sheikh Hasina’s extradition request. In December last year, Bangladesh wrote a letter to India requesting the extradition of Sheikh Hasina. Although India had told about getting a formal diplomatic letter, but no response was given to it.

He said that on 5 August 2024, when the army officials asked Sheikh Hasina to resign during the coup, Sheikh said that she should shoot me and bury me here in Bangbhavan (President’s residence). These were the last words before resigning from the post of Sheikh Hasina. After this, he took refuge in India.

Mohammad Yunus was made the head of the interim government

On August 5, 2024, the Sheikh Hasina government was coup in Bangladesh. After him, Mohammad Yunus was made the head of the interim government. Sheikh Hasina remembers the painful murder of the family and said emotional talk

Recalling the killing of the entire family including her father and the first President of the country Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “I lost my father, mother, brother and the whole family in a single day. After this we were not allowed to return to our country. I feel deeply sad to lose my own.”

He further said, “Allah protects me. Perhaps he wants to do something good through me. Those who have committed these terrible crimes must be punished. This is my pledge.”

‘I am alive, son… I will come again’

During the conversation, the families of Awami League leaders and activists told how their loved ones were killed and they were persecuted. Hearing these things, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said emotionally, “These people are not human. They will have to face justice one day. Allah will never forgive such oppression.”

When a woman told the story of her father’s murder, Hasina replied, “You will definitely do justice, as I did after killing my parents. We will find those guilty. That day will definitely come. I have full faith in it, otherwise I am not alive today.”

When a supporter asked, “How are you?” So Sheikh Hasina smiled and said, “I am alive, son.” The second supporter said, “Allah give you a chance again,” so he replied, “he will definitely give it. So Allah has kept me alive till now. I am coming.”
