Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba resigned on Sunday (September 07, 2025), when he faced the party’s historic defeat in the parliamentary elections in the country in July. The move behind Ishiba’s move was his constant resignation from within the Liberal Democratic Party, in which he was being asked to give up the responsibility of defeat and leave the post.

Ishiba ignored the demand of opponents
Shigeru Ishiba, who became Prime Minister in October, ignored the demand for the resignation of his party’s right -wing opponents for more than a month. He had said that his withdrawal from his post will create political void in the country. He had raised the issue of rising prices, rice policy reforms and rising tension in the region along with their impact on tariffs and Japanese economy imposed by the US.

LDP leadership decision on election
According to the news agency AP, the decision to step down his post has come a day before the LDP’s decision to hold the leadership election, which had been approved, there would have been a kind of no confidence motion against Ishiba.

Ishiba said to start the vote process for replacement
In a press conference, Shigeru Ishiba said that he will start the election process of his successor for the party leadership. He also said that the decision to be held on Monday will no longer be necessary.

Government shock in parliamentary elections in July
In the important parliamentary election held in July, Ishiba -led ruling alliance could not get a majority in the upper house with 248 seats, which had a serious impact on his government’s stability.

Meeting with former PM Suga and Agriculture Minister Koizumi
According to AP report, Ishiba held a meeting with Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and former Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga before Monday’s party voting. It is believed that these leaders had advised to resign.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Sunday indicated that he was about to leave the post. He has taken this decision after increasing criticism from within his own party and a crushing defeat in the July parliamentary election. According to Japanese TV reports, party leaders demanded him to take political responsibility.

Responsible responsibility in October

Ishiba took over as the Prime Minister in October last year. However, for the past one month, he was facing pressure to resign from the right -wing faction of the party, but he was constantly opposing this demand. This move of Ishiba came at a time when his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was going to decide on Monday whether the leadership elections within the party should be held soon or not. This decision would have been like a kind of no confidence motion against Ishiba.

What is the real reason for resignation?

Shigeru Ishiba took over as Prime Minister in October, but his party suffered a crushing defeat in the July parliamentary election. The government’s stability was questioned due to not getting a majority in the upper house with 248 seats. Since this defeat, Ishiba had come under target of protest within the party. Especially the right -wing faction was constantly demanding his resignation. Till now, he continued to face pressure, but eventually he decided to leave the post.

Big step before new leadership elections

This step of Ishiba is considered very important, because his party was going to vote on the next day i.e. on Monday. If this proposal had passed, it would have been like expressing direct mistrust against Ishiba. In order to avoid this situation and calm the increasing dissatisfaction in the party, he chose the way to resign himself.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is planning to announce his resignation soon, as his alliance has not been able to gather a majority in the upper house of the Parliament due to the defeat in the election. This information was given by the local media on Wednesday (July 23, 2025).

According to the report of the news agency AFP, Ishiba had informed his close people about his intention to leave the post after the announcement of the US-Japan trade agreement on Wednesday.

What did Japanese PM Ishiba say?
According to the report by the news agency Reuters, after the defeat in the elections held on Sunday, Japanese PM Ishiba said that he will continue to hold the post to pursue the tariff agreement and deal with the growing economic problems. However, on Wednesday, when reporters asked him if the tariff agreement with Washington would affect his decision to continue in the post, Ishiba said that I cannot say anything until I review the results of the agreement.

Japanese First Sanseto Party gave a tough fight
According to Japan’s Yamiuri newspaper, Ishiba told his close colleagues on Tuesday evening that he would accept his responsibility of defeat in the election after the business agreement. His departure in less than a year after taking charge will lead to a war of succession within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as the party is facing challenges from new political parties, especially right parties.

These include the Japanese First Sanseto Ati Putanti Party, which gained an edge in Sunday’s voting and increased its representation from one to 14 in the 248 -seat high house. The party has made promises to curb immigration, cut tax and provide financial relief to families troubled by rising prices.
