Ramesh Sippy has revealed in an interview that at that time the newspapers had declared Sholay a flop. Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra’s film was made with a budget of Rs 3 crore and proved to be an all-time blockbuster. The filmmaker told that industry trackers initially thought that the makers of the 1975 action comedy would never be able to recover their investment. Immediately after the film was released in theatres, it did not generate much revenue.

Ramesh Sippy said in an interview to Siddharth Kannan- ‘He wrote that the investment was so much that the makers would never be able to recover it. He even claimed that such expensive films will ruin the industry. If filmmakers keep spending like this, the industry will sink. But after five weeks he took back his statement and admitted that he was wrong. The initial budget of the film was Rs 1 crore but in the end it was made for Rs 3 crore. Rs 1 crore at that time is equivalent to approximately Rs 100 crore today.

Ramesh Sippy further said – But right after the first quiet weekend, the whole atmosphere changed. After that the industry started celebrating the film. The industry was happy. He said- It is good that the big film did not work. The same discussion was taking place among distributors, exhibitors and producers. He felt that this film would ruin him. People thought that we had gone crazy by making such an expensive film.

First step in the cinematic world at the age of 52
The full name of the veteran actor was Avatar Kishan Hangal, a veteran artist of Indian cinema who made it to the hearts of millions of spectators with his simplicity, sensitive acting and deep voice.

Born on 1 February 1914 in Sialkot, Hangal was not only a great actor, but also a freedom fighter and theater artist. In fact, Avatar Kishan was a freedom fighter before coming to Hangal films and in the early days he used to do a tailor work but was also active in India’s freedom struggle between 1929 and 1947. He had to remain imprisoned in Karachi jail for three years.

The book ‘Life and Times of A.K. Hangal also mentions untouched aspects of his life, according to this, his father’s close friend advised him to become a tailor. After this, Hangal also learned this art from a skilled tailor of England.

At the age of 52, he started his film career with the film ‘Third Kasam’ in which he played the role of Raj Kapoor’s elder brother and after that he worked in more than 250 films. In ‘Sholay’, dialogues like his character of ‘Rahim Chacha’ and ‘so much silence why Bhai’ gave him a distinct identity among cine lovers.

Hangal’s best movies
He acted in about 250 Hindi films from 1966 to 2005, including films like ‘Sholay’ (1975), ‘Namak Haram’, ‘Anthi’, ‘Bachchi’, ‘Lagaan’ (2001) and ‘Prank’ (2002). He acted in 16 films with Rajesh Khanna, including ‘Aap Ki Kasam’, ‘Amar Deep’, ‘Kudrat’ and ‘Sautela Bhai’.

Jagdeep decided a long journey before becoming ‘Surma Bhopali’
Jagdeep was such an artist that he used to leave his mark wherever he used to go. He used to get well in the hearts of the audience with his dialogue, facial expression and funny style. After the father’s death, Jagdeep started working at the age of just 6.

His mother used to live by making loaves in the orphanage in Mumbai. Seeing his mother’s hard work, the legendary artist also started working from a young age to help him. He used to sell comb, soap and toys on the streets of Mumbai. During the sale of the same, a person caught sight of him. He was none other than BR Chopra Saheb.

At that time, the filmmaker was looking for a child artist for his film ‘Afsana’. He worked only in this film, because by selling goods, he could earn only one or a half rupees a day or one and a half rupees a day, while he was getting only three rupees for clapping on the set. It was from here that his film journey started.

After this, he played small, but memorable roles in films like ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, ‘Munna’, ‘Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke’, and, ‘R Paar’. He was also honored by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for his brilliant performance in ‘Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke’. Jagdeep’s real name was Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri. He was born on 29 March 1939 in a small town named Datia in Madhya Pradesh. His father was a barrister. After the death of the father, the condition of the house deteriorated due to which he had to work from a very young age. The veteran actor breathed his last at his home in Mumbai on 8 July 2020 at the age of 81.
