A demand has been made from the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of the alleged theft of donations from Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya. A lawyer has sent a letter petition to the Chief Justice and requested for an impartial investigation, calling it a matter related to the faith of crores of devotees. A lawyer named Anoop Awasthi has said that to maintain people’s trust, it is necessary to conduct an investigation under the supervision of the court.

It has been said in the letter that this temple is operated under the trust formed due to the historic decision of the Supreme Court in 2020. Ramlala’s consecration on 22 January 2024 was a historical and cultural moment for crores of Indians. Now a large number of devotees are reaching there every day. The donation given by the devotees in the donation box of the temple is not a financial transaction. It is a symbol of their unwavering devotion, dedication and faith in God.

Anoop Awasthi has told that there are allegations of huge financial misappropriation and corruption in the money donated to Ram Temple. It has also come to light that some former employees and suspects have disproportionate assets. The Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a 3-member SIT at the administrative level, but no FIR has been registered in this matter yet.

It has been said in this letter that in such an important matter, administrative investigation alone is not enough. People fear that with time this matter will be suppressed. Theft of property dedicated to a deity is not an ordinary criminal matter. Since this trust itself has been formed by the order of the Supreme Court, it is its constitutional responsibility to maintain its transparency.

The petitioner has demanded that the Supreme Court should get this alleged misappropriation investigated by CBI or any other independent agency. The court should monitor the investigation to ensure its impartiality. The petitioner has also demanded that a thorough investigation be conducted into all aspects of collection and expenditure of donations in the temple. In future, a court-monitored system should be created to protect the donated money and properties.
