Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Subhendu Adhikari, on Sunday (October 19, 2025) alleged that Trinamool Congress members attacked his car in South 24 Parganas district, where he had gone to participate in Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations. However, Trinamool Congress rejected Shubhendu’s allegations and termed the incident of attack on his car as a result of people’s dissatisfaction with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Shubhendu claimed that attempts were made to stop his car at at least seven places and he was attacked in front of Lalpur Madrasa. While sharing the alleged video of the incident on ‘X’, he wrote, ‘Today I had to face attacks from illegal Bangladeshi Muslims several times in South 24 Parganas district. The conspiracy of obstruction, vandalism and anarchy was hatched by none other than Trinamool Congress District Council member Rekha Ghazi with the help and support of Superintendent of Police (SP) Koteswara Rao.

Shubhendu Adhikari’s claim about the attackers

Shubhendu said, ‘I was not going to participate in any political program, but as a Hindu, I was going to participate in Kali Puja and Diwali celebrations.’ He claimed that the attackers were mainly illegal infiltrators, who are worried about their future due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list.

Shubhendu told that the people who tried to stop his car were raising slogans like ‘Joy Bangla’. He said that the central forces cleared the road and he proceeded with his scheduled program of inaugurating Kali Puja pandals.

‘I am not afraid of fundamentalists’

Shubhendu said, ‘This area is adjacent to Bangladesh and this proximity has given them an opportunity to settle here with the help of the infiltrator-friendly mechanism of Trinamool Congress. Can’t a Hindu in West Bengal freely participate in any religious event without facing hindrances from fundamentalists? They cannot scare me, I will come to the area even during Jagaddhatri Puja.

TMC’s violence against political opponents

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya also reacted to the attack on the opposition leader in Bengal. He wrote in a tweet on ‘X’, ‘While on his way to inaugurate and participate in Maa Kali Puja, opposition leader Subhendu Adhikari was attacked by TMC’s Lungi Vahini, who used women as shields in Mathurapur and Mandir Bazaar areas.’

He further wrote, ‘We strongly condemn this heinous and premeditated attack on the opposition leader, which was carried out by TMC Zilla Parishad member Rekha Ghazi and carried out by illegal Bangladeshis under her direction. Such violence against political opponents exposes TMC’s desperation and its blatant disregard for democracy and the rule of law.

Trinamool Congress held BJP responsible

At the same time, Trinamool spokesperson Jai Prakash Majumdar claimed that the common people protested against Shubhendu because he is angry with the BJP. Majumdar said, ‘The BJP-led government at the Center has not released West Bengal’s share of funds, due to which these poor people have been marginalized.’

He said, ‘BJP leaders should be careful. People are angry in every village, market and street across Bengal. Bengal knows how to protest and BJP leaders will have to face such protests everywhere. Union Minister Sukant Majumdar said such incidents encourage instead of discouraging BJP members in the fight against the ruling Trinamool Congress.
